Doughboys are basically just the nickname for American soldiers in WWI.

The reason for the nickname is unknown, but some claim that it was because of Continental Army soldiers having clay on their uniforms to keep the piping white. When it rained, it would turn the bits of clay into "doughy blobs," hence "doughboys" were born.

America had approximately 4.7 million "doughboys."

The picture depicts Germany, who is represented by an ape, causing carnage and kidnapping a woman. The image illustrates the ape as brutal through things like his nightmarish figure and the blood on the end of his club. This translates to how the government wants Germany depicted so that people will enlist, which is specifically stated for men to do at the bottom of the flyer.

The picture depicts a man staring out a window at soldiers going off to fight in a war. The main idea and goal of the flyer is to get the audience to want to join in order to refrain from being a coward. The man on the inside of the building, the suit the man is wearing, and even the man's hand inside of his pocket all symbolize the comfortable life that an American lives on a daily basis. This stands in contrast to the men on the outside who are all mirroring each other, which shows discipline, and that is not something that a casual weaker American would be able to accomplish. Basically, the flyer is saying that if you stay "inside" in your comfortable daily life then you are a coward and a man who does not want to work for anything like the freedoms that could be taken away if the war is lost. However, if you go out and fight "like a man" then you could be considered much more than that.

The basics of the flyer is to get the viewer to buy government bonds. It tries to accomplish this by appealing to the viewer's sense of pathos. The image shows a soldier struggling through a battlefield and holding up the U.S. flag. The text above the soldier says that the soldier is going "Over the top FOR YOU." The designers of the flyer want the viewer to feel like they must return the favor that the soldiers are providing for them.

The first says "The call to duty," which is an attempt to convince Americans that it is their duty to serve America by joining the Army. The second phrase says "Join the Army," which is nothing special; that is basically the main point of any of the propaganda flyers. The third says "For home and country," which is the flyer designers trying to get the viewers to understand the importance of fighting for their country: if they don't fight they lose their freedoms. It is a simple, yet effective way of getting people to enlist.
