Ice Breaking🎨

Our first Usrah class started with a delightful and creative ice-breaking activity! To get to know each other better, we had to draw a self-portrait on a piece of paper (yes, artistic skills were optional 😄). Once everyone finished their masterpieces, the drawings were shuffled, redistributed randomly, and the guessing game began!

The challenge? We had 5 guesses to figure out whose drawing we received. Most of my classmates nailed it quickly, but I faced a funny dilemma—two people looked so similar to the drawing I got! 😂 It was tricky but so much fun trying to match the sketch to its artist.

Overall, the activity was a blast! It was full of laughter, surprises, and warm hellos as we discovered more about each other. Here’s the picture of the drawing I received—what do you think? 😊

💬 Let me know if you’ve ever tried an activity like this. I’d love to hear your stories! 🌟

Video Reflection (Sheikh Sulayman Ar-Ruhayli)🌟

Sheikh Sulayman Ar-Ruhayli highlights that the learning knowledge does not just suffice but also understands what it is that one learns and the right manners extend to the features that create a conducive environment for productive learning. In our session, he also delivered a really deep speech on the relationship between knowledge, understanding, and improper manners.

And to break it down:

Knowledge is that, which we acquire, be it facts, concepts, and information.

Understanding is the insight with which one reflects on that knowledge and internalizes it.

Manners are the style of learning and sharing the learning with the others, lovingly and effectively communicating with them.

In fact, he also made a lovely reminder that all our deeds-the prayer which is an act of worship-does require understanding: the hikmah and the use of the prayers, for example, could be motivating factors to enhance this aspect of our faith.

He explained the importance of manners in acquiring knowledge, then taught that if sincerity and humility marked one's approach to learning, Allah could grant that person not only knowledge but wisdom to use that knowledge for better. This perspective inspires us to make us not just learn things but learn them and teach them.

The IIUM Rector’s talk was a thought-provoking journey into the multiple roles of Muslim scholars and the deeper meaning of tawhid. The presentation explored four essential responsibilities that Muslim academia must embrace ❤️

1. Pursue, Establish, and Defend Truths - This role underscores the importance of Islam as the ultimate source of truth, guiding scholars to seek and uphold what is right.

2. Establish Justice - Specifically in the realm of knowledge, ensuring that epistemological justice prevails, so that truth is not only sought but also shared equitably.

3. Advance Muslim Knowledge Culture - Rooted in the teachings of the Quran, scholars are reminded that God is the greatest teacher (mu’allim), and it is their duty to nurture a culture of continuous learning and wisdom.

4. Inherit the Legacy of the Prophets - Muslim scholars are entrusted with the noble task of continuing the prophets’ work in spreading truth and knowledge to the world.

Angel Jibril (Gabriel) came in the form of a man, dressed in strikingly white clothes with jet-black hair, and no signs of travel on him. This appearance amazed the companions, as it was unusual for someone unfamiliar to look so immaculate.

Islam: Jibril began by asking the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) about Islam. In response, the Prophet outlined the Five Pillars: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger (Shahada), performing the five daily prayers (Salah), giving charity to those in need (Zakat), fasting during Ramadan (Sawm), and undertaking the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) if able.

Iman: Jibril then asked about Iman (faith). The Prophet described it as belief in six core elements: belief in Allah, His angels, His revealed books, His messengers, the Last Day, and in divine decree (Qadar), whether good or bad.

Ihsan: When Jibril inquired about Ihsan (spiritual excellence), the Prophet explained it as worshipping Allah as though you see Him. Even if you cannot see Him, know that He sees you.

The Hour (Day of Judgment): Finally, Jibril asked about the signs of the Last Day. The Prophet mentioned some of these signs, including a slave woman giving birth to her mistress and barefoot, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings.

The talk begins by exploring the story of Bani Israel, a nation that was blessed with incredible favors from Allah, such as manna and salwa from the heavens and the miraculous parting of the sea. Despite these blessings, their repeated disobedience to Allah led to their downfall, transitioning them from a position of honor to disgrace.

One of the key lessons from their history is the importance of recognizing Allah’s blessings and fulfilling the responsibilities that come with them. Nations that fail to uphold these responsibilities and turn away from divine guidance ultimately face decline. The talk also highlights how moral and ethical decay, such as neglecting justice, embracing corruption, and abandoning religious values, plays a significant role in the downfall of societies.

Sheikh Dr. Isam Rajab draws parallels between the historical experiences of Bani Israel and the challenges faced by modern societies. He emphasizes how similar patterns of moral and ethical failure are causing contemporary nations to falter. This serves as a wake-up call for Muslims to adhere to Islamic principles, uphold justice, and maintain strong moral and ethical values to avoid the same fate.

The lecture also offers spiritual and practical guidance. It stresses the importance of strengthening one’s faith by maintaining a close relationship with Allah through regular worship and adherence to Islamic teachings. Additionally, the talk underscores the need for strong and ethical leadership, as well as a united community, to prevent societal decline and ensure stability and prosperity.

GROUP 1: IHSAN AND ESCHATOLOGY 🌟⏳

What is Ihsan?
Ihsan means "excellence" or "perfection" in worship. It’s about worshipping Allah as if you can see Him, and even if you don’t, knowing that He always sees you. 🌌✨

What is Eschatology?
Eschatology is the study of the end times, focusing on death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul and humankind. In Islam, it includes the Day of Judgment, resurrection, heaven, and hell. 🌍⚖️

Ihsan in Islamic Teachings 🕋

Practical Ways to Practice Ihsan:

Sincerity in Worship: Perform prayers, fasting, and other acts of worship with true devotion and focus. 🛐

Ethical Conduct: Be honest, kind, and just in how you treat others. 🌟

Continuous Self-Improvement: Always work on being better spiritually, morally, and ethically. 📈

Eschatology in Islamic Belief 🕌

Key Beliefs:

Day of Judgment: Everyone will be resurrected and judged by Allah for their actions. ⚖️

Resurrection: The dead will be brought back to life, and deeds will be weighed. 🪶📖

Heaven and Hell: Paradise awaits the righteous, while the wicked face punishment. 🌴🔥

The Link Between Ihsan and Eschatology 🌟➕⏳

Preparing for the Hereafter:

Living with Ihsan: Practicing Ihsan helps Muslims prepare for Judgment Day by living righteously and being aware of Allah’s constant presence. 🙏💭

Accountability: Knowing that every action will be judged motivates excellence in behavior. 👣✨

Spiritual Awareness:

Constant Remembrance: Ihsan keeps Allah in your heart and mind, which aligns with the belief in ultimate accountability. 🌌💡

Moral Vigilance: Eschatology reinforces the need for ethical living since every action will have consequences. ⚖️🛤️

Conclusion 📝

Integrating Ihsan into daily life is essential for preparing for the hereafter. By striving for spiritual excellence and living with constant awareness of Allah’s presence, Muslims align their actions with their faith. The belief in eschatology serves as a powerful reminder that every deed will be accounted for, encouraging mindfulness and a commitment to ethical living. Together, Ihsan and eschatological beliefs inspire a life rooted in devotion, righteousness, and preparation for the ultimate meeting with Allah. 🌟🌌

GROUP 3: QURAN AS A BOOK OF GUIDANCE 📖✨

Key Themes of Guidance 🌟

1️⃣ Faith & Worship: The Quran teaches how to connect with Allah through faith and acts of worship like prayer and fasting. 🙏
2️⃣ Social Relationships: It emphasizes kindness, justice, and respect in dealing with others. 🤝
3️⃣ Spiritual Development: The Quran guides believers toward self-purification and a closer relationship with Allah. 🌌

Important Verses of Guidance 🕋

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:2): "This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah." 🧭

Surah Al-Isra (17:9): "Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most upright." 🌟

Surah Al-Nahl (16:89): "And We have sent down to you the Book as a clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy." 💡

Why Is the Quran a Timeless Guide? 🌍⏳

The Quran remains a timeless guide because its teachings are universal, addressing the needs of humanity across all eras and cultures. It provides a harmonious balance between individual rights and collective responsibilities, ensuring justice and equity in society. Furthermore, the Quran offers practical solutions to modern issues, proving its relevance in the face of evolving challenges. Its ability to address both the spiritual and practical aspects of life makes it a complete and enduring source of guidance.

It was such a fun and heartwarming moment because I got to learn a little about each sister, and I was pleasantly surprised by how diverse our group is 🌏✨. There are sisters from different states in Malaysia, and even from countries like Colombia!

After the introductions, Sr. Ainin gave us a quick but clear briefing 📝 on the tasks we need to complete in order to pass this usrah. It was a great way to begin—light-hearted, informative, and filled with positive energy 💫.

Embracing Hikmah: A Journey of Wisdom in Action

🌟 What is Hikmah?

In Islam, hikmah (حِكْمَة) is often translated as wisdom, but it goes far beyond simply being knowledgeable. It refers to the ability to judge situations wisely, act appropriately, and apply knowledge in the best and most thoughtful way.

It is about knowing when to speak, when to listen, and how to respond in a way that reflects both understanding and compassion.

The Qur’an beautifully states:

"He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding."
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269)

🔍 Steps Toward Acquiring Hikmah

Wisdom does not appear overnight. It is cultivated through intention, consistent actions, and sincere self-improvement. Here are three meaningful components of this journey:

💭 Niyyah: Realigning Our Intentions

Before we act, it is important to pause and rethink our reasons.
Ask yourself: Why am I doing this?
Is my intention rooted in sincerity and goodness? Having a clear and pure niyyah helps us stay grounded and gives true value to our actions.

👐 ‘Amal: Putting Values into Practice

Knowing what is right is only the beginning. The next step is to live by those values in our everyday life.
Ask: How do I apply virtues in my daily routine?
Whether it is being respectful during a group project, staying honest in tough situations, or helping someone without expecting anything in return, every small act of goodness counts.

💖 Ihsan: Embodying Excellence from Within

True wisdom shines when we internalize positive virtues so deeply that they become part of our character.
Ask yourself: Have I made these values a part of who I am?
Practicing ihsan means doing good even when no one is watching, simply because it feels right and aligns with our faith and values.

🕌 From Salah (Prayer)

Prayer is not just a routine, but a way to strengthen our connection with Allah and protect ourselves from harmful behavior.
Allah reminds us that prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing, and that remembering Him brings even greater benefit.
The Prophet ﷺ emphasized that Islam is built upon five pillars, with prayer being one of them.
It is also the first deed we will be held accountable for on the Day of Judgment. If our prayers are sincere, the rest of our actions will reflect that.

🌙 From Sawm (Fasting)

Fasting trains our souls to be disciplined, patient, and mindful.
Allah revealed that fasting is not new, but was also practiced by those before us so that we may develop taqwa, or God-consciousness.
The Prophet ﷺ mentioned several blessings unique to fasting, including the sweet scent of a fasting person's breath being more beloved to Allah than perfume, the constant prayers of angels, and the opening of Paradise. Fasting brings forgiveness and freedom from evil influences.

💰 From Zakah (Charity)

Zakah is both a spiritual and social practice.
It purifies our wealth and helps support those in need, reminding us that what we have is a trust from Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ taught that giving in charity does not decrease wealth, but increases blessings, dignity, and status in the sight of Allah.
Those who withhold zakah face serious consequences, including regret in the Hereafter.

🕋 From Hajj (Pilgrimage)

Hajj is a powerful journey of spiritual renewal.
Allah calls us to perform it with sincerity, free from arguments and sinful acts. The goal is to strengthen taqwa and reflect deeply on our purpose.
The Prophet ﷺ said that a Hajj that is accepted by Allah carries no reward except Paradise itself. This shows how deeply transformative the experience can be.

💖 What is Khushu’?

Khushu’ (خشوع) is the peaceful, focused feeling you get when your heart and body are fully present in salah. It’s about being humble, calm, and deeply connected to Allah while praying. You’re not just going through the motions, you're having a real moment with your Creator.

🧠 What Scholars Say

Ibn Taymiyyah described khushu’ as when the heart feels aware and humbled before Allah, and the body naturally follows with devotion.

Ibn al-Qayyim said that the level of khushu’ in our prayer determines how much reward and acceptance we receive. So the more sincere and focused our prayer is, the greater its value.

🌱 Leads to Success

In Surah Al-Mu’minun, Allah mentions that the successful believers are those who have khushu’ in their prayer. It's the first quality on the list, which shows how important it is.

🧼 Wipes Away Sins

The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person stands to pray, their sins fall from them with every movement. A prayer filled with khushu’ helps the heart turn back to Allah and opens the door to sincere forgiveness.

🛡 Prevents Wrongdoing

According to Surah Al-‘Ankabut, salah keeps a person away from immoral actions and bad behavior. But this only works when salah is performed with khushu’, not when it's done out of habit or rush.

As a student juggling assignments 📚, quizzes 📝, and caffeine-fueled study nights ☕😵‍💫, salah sometimes becomes a checklist task ✅. But learning about khushu’ made me pause ⏸️. I realised I was showing up to prayer physically 🙇‍♀️, but leaving my heart in the group chat 📱💬.

Khushu’ reminded me that salah is not just about standing and reciting 🗣️. It’s about slowing down 🐢, breathing 🌬️, and reconnecting with Allah 💖 after a long, chaotic day 🌀. When I started making wudu with intention 💧🤲 and actually paying attention to what I was saying in prayer 🕯️, it felt different. Calmer 😌. Lighter 🌤️.

I still have a long way to go 🛤️, but one sujood at a time 🤲, I’m learning to pray with presence, not just posture 🧡✨

🍽️ What is Sawm?

Sawm refers to fasting, especially during Ramadan. It involves refraining from food, drink, and physical needs from dawn to sunset. But it's not just about hunger. Fasting is a form of worship that helps shape discipline, humility, and the development of taqwa, which means deep awareness of Allah.

🧠 What is Taqwa?

Taqwa means staying conscious of Allah in everything we do. While some may translate it as fear, it also includes love, respect, and knowing that Allah is always watching over us. Through fasting, we become more spiritually alert and mindful of our actions.

As someone who studies human behavior and social systems 📚, sawm made me see things a little differently. Sociology teaches us about inequality, empathy, and how people are shaped by the world around them. Fasting helped me feel it on a deeper level.

Not eating all day sounds simple on paper, but once you actually go through it, you begin to understand what many people experience every day. It becomes more than just theory. It turns into real empathy. That shift makes you more grateful 🙏 and generous 💛.

I realised that taqwa is not just a spiritual feeling. It is a choice we make in how we act, speak, and treat others, especially when no one is watching. Fasting challenges our habits, tests our patience, and builds a sense of personal responsibility.

It feels a lot like sociology, but with more heart ❤️ and slightly less coffee ☕😅.

This is my group poster for our presentation on zakah and sadaqah 💸🤝. As a sociology student, I found it super interesting because these acts of giving are basically social justice in action. They help reduce inequality, build community bonds, and create a safety net for those in need 🏘️❤️. It’s like applying sociology, but with barakah. Plus, sadaqah is the only kind of giving that leaves your heart full and your soul richer 😄✨

A little more of that would make Usrah time even more exciting and enjoyable!

Looking back, I realise that having access to this kind of knowledge is such a blessing and not something to take for granted. Usrah 2 was more than just a class. It was a space that healed me in ways I didn't expect and brought back the kind of hope that reminded me why I want to grow as a better Muslimah every day 🌙🤍.

As a sociology student, it also made me reflect on how important guidance and community are in shaping our values and identity. We always talk about social structures and influence in class, but this experience reminded me that spiritual knowledge is a powerful form of social support too. It shapes how we see ourselves, how we treat others, and how we carry our responsibilities in this world.

Alhamdulillah for this journey. I truly hope I continue to seek knowledge wherever I go and that I never neglect the responsibilities that come with being a Muslimah 🌼📖.

Reflecting on Hajj, Umrah, Patience, and Trust

Among the most profound journeys a Muslim can undertake is the pilgrimage to Makkah. Hajj, being one of the five pillars of Islam, is a once-in-a-lifetime duty for those who are physically and financially able 🌍🤲. This sacred journey, performed during Zulhijjah, includes significant rites such as standing at Arafah, collecting pebbles in Muzdalifah, staying in Mina, circling the Kaabah (tawaf), running between Safa and Marwah (sa’i), and the symbolic act of animal sacrifice. Each step carries deep meaning and historical weight.

Umrah, on the other hand, is a voluntary act of worship that can be done at any time of the year 🌙. It includes entering the state of ihram, performing tawaf and sa’i, and ending with tahallul (haircut). Though shorter and less physically demanding, it still holds immense spiritual reward and connection with Allah.

One of the most powerful themes in both Hajj and Umrah is sacrifice. Pilgrims leave behind comfort, routine, and material ease to reconnect with their Creator. This journey reflects the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son Ismail (AS), reminding us that true love for Allah sometimes means giving up what we love most 🐑❤️.

Another core value is taqwa, or God-consciousness. Throughout the pilgrimage, every action calls for patience, humility, and self-discipline. The Qur’an beautifully reminds us:
“Pack your provisions, but the best provision is taqwa.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:197)
This shows that while we prepare physically, it is our spiritual readiness that counts the most 🌿.

The journey of Hajj and Umrah is not just a physical experience. It is an emotional and spiritual transformation that brings the believer closer to Allah and strips away the layers of dunya, leaving behind sincerity, gratitude, and submission 🤍.

Giving with Purpose: The Beauty of Zakah and Sadaqah

🌿 What Makes Zakah So Special?

Zakah is not just an act of giving. It is a core pillar of Islam and a direct reflection of our obedience and care for others. The word itself comes from the Arabic root "zaka," which means to grow and to purify. By giving zakah, Muslims purify their wealth and cleanse their hearts from attachment to material things. It’s a reminder that our money is not just ours — it’s also a trust from Allah for the benefit of others.

This charity is not random. It’s a duty with specific guidelines. It is meant to support those who truly need it, such as the poor, orphans, those in debt, and others mentioned in the Qur'an. When fulfilled sincerely, zakah becomes a source of barakah (blessings) and social justice 💫.

🤝 Zakah vs. Sadaqah: What’s the Difference?

Zakah is mandatory for eligible Muslims, calculated at a fixed rate (commonly 2.5 percent) on qualifying wealth once the nisab threshold is met. It is systematic and structured, meant to balance the economic scales within the ummah.

Sadaqah, on the other hand, is completely voluntary and can be given at any time, in any amount, and in many forms — whether through money, food, kind words, or even a smile 😊. It is a beautiful way to express love, empathy, and kindness without limits.

💰 Two Main Forms of Zakah

Zakat al-Mal is the annual zakah paid on accumulated wealth, such as savings, investments, or business income.

Zakat al-Fitr is a special charity given at the end of Ramadan to help those in need celebrate Eid with joy and dignity.

🌱 The Wisdom Behind Giving

Zakah is not just financial. It is deeply spiritual. It completes a Muslim’s faith and reveals sincerity in belief. It softens the heart, removes stinginess, and inspires a culture of generosity.

It also strengthens the community, creating a sense of shared responsibility — like a family that supports one another in love and care.

Even more amazing, the Prophet ﷺ assured us that giving in charity never reduces wealth. In fact, it multiplies blessings both in this world and the next.

“Wealth does not decrease by giving charity.” (Hadith, Muslim)

🕊️ Trusting Allah: The Value of Tawakkul

When we give, we show trust in Allah. We are letting go of our attachment to wealth and believing that Allah will provide something even better in return 💛.

“Whatever you spend in good, He will replace it...” (Surah Saba, 34:39)

Giving zakah and sadaqah helps nurture reliance on Allah rather than on worldly possessions. It’s an act of faith, not just finance.

🤍 Building Brotherhood Through Giving

Zakah and sadaqah help close the gap between people. They connect the hearts of the giver and the receiver and remind us that we are part of one ummah — one big family.

Zakah brings fairness into the economy by redistributing wealth with care and intention. Sadaqah spreads love through everyday kindness.

“...so that it may not merely circulate between the rich among you.” (Surah Al-Hashr, 59:7)

“The believer is not the one who eats his fill while his neighbor is hungry.” (Hadith, Sunan al-Kubra)

Through giving, we learn empathy, we share in others' struggles, and we build a stronger, more compassionate society — one good deed at a time 🌍🤲.
