Going back in history and looking at the early aircraft, the RAF website says that the earliest form of fighter jet was the ‘North American Sabre’. This aircraft was used in 1947 and was a single-engined jet fighter. The top speed of this Jet was 671 mph, which was actually the world speed record set by the plane in 1948, and could travel a range of 330 miles. The Sabre was armed with six .50-caliber M3 machine guns mounted in the nose. The Mark 18 manual-ranging computing gun sight was replaced in later models with the A-1CM, which used radar ranging which is a very early type of radar.

the jet i have chosen to compare to the American Sabre is the F-35 Lightning II. This jets targeting capabilities were upgraded. It has an Active Electronically Scanned Array multi-function radar with Synthetic Aperture Radar and Ground Moving Target Indication capabilities. The F-35's advanced stealth allows pilots to penetrate areas without being detected by radars. It uses precision-guided munitions and air-to-air radar-guided missiles for combat in the battle space which is also more advanced than our earlier 50.cal machine guns. The aircraft has a speed of 1,930 km/h (1199 mph) and a range of 2,220 km (1379 miles) which is also a lot more advanced than before .
