Uncovering the Old Story by Archana Shukla

Please post your reflections on the story of learning you were told when you were in school. What were the messages you received about learning, schooling, and what it means to be smart? How do they differ from the messages you hope to be sending your students about learning?

O My God! The best life I lived, is in my school. A class full of enjoyment and energy to learn, waiting for the teacher to assign the work like Project based learning where showing casing of work was encouraged. The place where student gets the opportunity to display and reflect on each other’s work. Parents visit helped to understand the child ability, confidence and level. I miss those days filled with colourful exhibitions displayed in the classroom and corridors. As days passed by, I feel that liberty of working style is limited according to school boundaries. But IB is trying to bring back the methods which would make students to enjoy learning and reflect on the learning. Happy to know the expected standard from the curriculum. Wish to receive a little help to encourage creative learning to happen. Padmavathi Yadav

It was always a place to stay disciplined.Completing Homework on regular basis was important. We were rewarded for committing less mistakes. More emphasis was on reading and learning rather then fun and play. Teachers were strict and there was extreme competition for getting more marks amongst the students.

I remember my Maths teacher....his writing on the black board....it was as if he had an unseen ruler of sorts...from top of the board, to the last line it was always straight and perfect...... and was very passionate about teaching Maths....wish I could write like that on the board....

It was my Geography teacher who triggered off the "wanderlust" in me. The way she narrated geography lessons were as if I was reading a picture book! I relive those lessons when I travel and explore-that's learning for me and will always be!

I have yet to meet a more brilliant English teacher than my mom; Fatima George. While I never really was her student in the conventional sense, I remember students coming over to our house during board exams for last minute help. I actually used to sit very close to the door of the living room so I could hear her talk about O Henry, Kalidasa, Cedric Mount, Jerome K Jerome among other literary greats. I think my love for the language started at home...and I have my mom to thank for.
Priya G <3

School days are the best days of my life. I was the most wanted student in every grade as I was very mischievous and to add to my trouble I had my replica [my twin] who was an ideal student. Nonetheless, there are some teachers who left a mark for a life-time. School was a synonym to discipline and values. Learning was very formal using traditional chalk-board method, yet was fun. It was my English teacher who apparently was a [Brit]nun who inspired me to read and love the English language.

We used to gossip and play and some times fight over silly things. The most exciting part used to be 'the exchange of lunch boxes'. Apart from sharing lunches, we also used to share our silly secrets. In class 10, I was kicked out of my history class by my teacher when I realized I had been fighting over a pencil with my friend way too loudly and felt all their eyes on us.

Till I passed out the high school I used to be very hesitant to speak in English being a student of a Gujarati Medium school. The most difficult task was facing the interview and group discussion session at the time of university entrance exam. But somehow I managed. I must salute my couple of the English teachers, who taught me English at middle school level as a second language. The way they taught us the fundamentals of grammar made my life easier, while incorporating real life examples from Gujarati language and the culture.... Stay happy, stay blessed Shaila Ma'am and Prerna Ma'am, wherever you are!...:)....The moral - Understanding grammatical concepts of any language makes it easy to learn further.

I remember my Math teache who we used to call Uncle Podger, for no apparent reason except for the fact that we were doing the story Uncle Podger hangs a picture. But he hasthe honour of getting me all sweaty at the mere mention of math even till today. He never met a student in the eye, came and scribbled something on the board and then failed most of us in the exam.
