- People who abuse the drug will crush, chew, or break the pills apart to remove the outer coating in order to get a the high quicker. With normal use, the effects of the drug are released slowly over 12 hours. This way, the abusers can get a fast and deadly high.
- If pregnant, prolonged use can result in neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, which may be life-threatening

- symptoms of overdose include: difficulty breathing, slowed or stopped breathing, dizziness, fainting, limp or weak muscles, loss of consciousness or coma.
- severe withdrawal
- withdrawal symptoms include: restlessness, watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, sweating, chills), muscle or joint aches and pains, irritability, anxiety, and depression, sleeping issues, cramps, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart and breathing rate.

Of the 803 total deaths related to the drug, 117 were linked specifically to Oxycontin. 

In a Consensus Development Conference statement published in late 1997, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimated that approximately 600,000 people in the United States are opiate-dependent

Statistics compiled by the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) in 2000 say that the number of such visits was 10,825 per year, more than double the 5,211 visits reported just two years earlier.
