There are five main branches to this, they can be seen as five key themes that are necessary for ELA instruction. Included in the five main branches are culturally relevant instruction, the six traits of writing, assessment, mini-lessons, and writing conferences. Culturally relevant instruction is a necessity in all classrooms. It allows students to feel seen and respected in the classroom, and it allows students to engage fully in the material because they are able to build connections with it. The six traits of writing are important to include in instruction. All traits should be focused on equally so that all writers are able to be well-rounded in their skills. It is critical for teachers to carryout effective and appropriate assessments in their classrooms. Mini-lessons are key to adding to students' "tool boxes," which will allow them to become better writers. Writing conferences allows for students to receive feedback on their writing, defend their writing, and come across different ideas to add to their writing as they orally explain their piece.
