The overproduction of cotton was caused by the need for cotton in World War 1. Because Scopes lost the trial, evolution was banned from classrooms, the decision in the case gave precedents to religion over education.

Three time presidential nominee William Jennings Bryan valenteered to prosecute Scopes. Clarence Darrow originally declined to defend Scopes since he was close to retiring. But news of Bryan's involvement changed his mind. Darrow's goal was to debunk fundamentalist christianity.
