Topic Sentence: A final way that Douglass uses his writing to support his position to end slavery, is by discussing how slavery corrupted the slaveholders.
Quote 1:"Mr. Severe was rightly named: he was a cruel man. I have seen him whip a woman, causing the blood to run half an hour at the time; and this, too, in the midst of her crying children, pleading for their mother’s release. He seemed to take pleasure in manifesting his fiendish barbarity." Excerpt 2, Paragraph 4
Quote 2:"That cheerful
eye, under the influence of slavery, soon became red with rage; that voice, made all of sweet accord, changed to one of harsh and horrid discord; and that angelic face gave place to that of a demon."

Hook: Imagine a slave that was separated from his family, stripped of his rights, and sent to work on a farm; that was Frederick Douglass.
Background Information: Frederick Douglass was a slave living in 19th Century America where slavery was a big deal. After becoming a free man, Douglass was an advocate for abolishing slavery, and used his writings, such as The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, which he wrote in 1845, to address powerful people and tell his story of slavery and to show what him and other slaves went through. One of the most phenomenal things about his narrative, is that he self- taught himself how to read and write so beautifully.
Thesis Statement: Along with the use of figurative language , Douglass uses his story, to reveal the effects of slavery on slaves and slave owners, which supports his position to end slavery.

Topic Sentence: Frederick Douglass was able to use his self-taught writing skills to change the way that many people viewed slavery. He was able to open many people's eyes by demonstrating the horrors of slavery, and how it affected every soul it touched. Douglass would write based on his experiences and what the other slaves around him experienced. He used this to try and sway white men that held power in society, and work to overall abolish slavery.
