The information is written in a very smooth way, and you gain the information about the topic easily. The essay isn't too long and doesn't stay in a place too long. In the second essay, the question is less addressed, but is still very well set up. I liked the choice that the author made to make a timeline of African-American theater, with information on each major era of development. This choice: appeals to our emotions by making this seem a reality perhaps. 

A confusion of genre conventions-why is the use of anecdote not used moreso and why is the blending of scene and statistic so jarring. 

The statistics were important and worked well with anecdote but the frequency in which they were used is problematic. 

If this was an argumentative essay this may have had more place for the anecdote. this is a research paper which warrants the use of these statistics—IS THIS NOT AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY?

I don't know how to write an essay or nonfiction piece in a smooth format, and I become very frustrated when writing in a more factual manner. I have interest in something, but I often can't stick to an argument. Overall, research papers and papers with a thesis have been extremely difficult for me, and I often get stuck and I don't know where to continue.
