Group 1 One of the most important moments in the book that influenced Scout and transformed her into a more mature girl, is Tom Robinson's trial. Before this trial she was an unexperienced little girl that had no sense of what was right and what was wrong. She basically just believed what others told her, for instance her Aunt Alexandra, which was a very racist women and often made nasty comments about race. The trial served as a window to the black community for her, and made her realize that Tom's conviction is unfair. Scout matured from this by learning about violence and the dark side of humanity.

At the beginning of the book she had presumptions about people based on her upbringing. She is shaped by the beliefs of those around her even when they are wrong. For example, she believed that black people where inferior based upon the beliefs of her community. Also, she believed all the scary stories about Boo Radley based on what Gem had told her. As the story unfolds she changes because she realizes that her presumptions were false and learns the truth.

She is who she is because of her dad. Her dad was older which gave him more experience. She was a tom-boy which in the 30s was not normalized but because of her dad she was able to express herself the way she wanted. She is dependent of others. You can see that because she spends the majority of her time with Dill and Jem.

We believe that by the end of the novel, she had already understood how society worked and what society expected from her. She was smart enough to see what she thought was right from wrong and decided to not be prisoner to the common paradigm. This is especially evident after the trial, when Scout gets to witness a situation where Bob Ewell accused Tom Robinson of raping Mayella Ewell.

Boo Radley was also someone who influenced her because even though she met him at the end of the novel she felt a connection to him and she saw that people are not always what they seem.

Before the Tom Robinson's trial, she was prejudiced along with her community because she didn't understand all of the details with the case, she only knew the perspective of the people and their opinions. But, when she reached the trial and listened to what really happened and to both sides of the story, she then becomes aware of the prejudicial society she lives in and the hypocrisy she lives among. She not only changed her perspective, but broadens her way of thinking and becomes aware of all of the ways society is discriminatory and pressured into doing what they are expected to do by others. She learned that not everything is what it seems.

She changed in many ways, but to start, she reached a certain level of maturity at the end of the book that she did not have at the beggining. Scout had to live through many traumatizing events that lead her to become an independant young women, as well as mature. Adding on, we believe that she learned how not to judge people, seen as at the beginning she judged Boo Radley and she heard people judging others. Many people judged Tom Robinson for the simple fact of his skin color. Others judged families for their living conditions and for their past relatives. Scout learned how not to judge people because once she met with the people she figured out they were nothing like the judgmental people described them. Furthermore, she changed by becoming more feminine. At the beginning of the story, Jean Louise is seen as a tomboy and through the end she becomes more of a lady because she was pressured into it.
