Schools in the South after the civil war were funded by the Freedman's Bureau. The bureau was extremely influential in helping education in the South at the time. In 1860s 50 teachers were active but only 7 were in the entire state of Georgia. Night schools and sabbath-day classes were also held to teach adults on how to write and read. Then, with the radical Reconstruction there was political violence resulting in organized groups like the KKK etc., there purpose was to destroy the Reconstruction of government, to kill or intimidate black and white Republican officials and use violence to prevent people from voting in the south and get involved in politics. White citizens tried to restore white-supremacy in the south. Sherman was trying to help the freed people by setting aside land in Georgia and south carolina for them to live. However because Sherman didn't have the authority to confinscate and distribute land this plan never fully took effect. Freedman's Bureau agents in fact said they should plan to go back to work as wage laborers for their former enslavers. Between 1868 and 1877, and especially after the Depression of 1873, economic issues supplanted Reconstruction as the foremost issue on the national agenda. The biggest threat to Republican power in the South had been the violence and intimidation of white Democrats. 
Democrats threatened to boycott Hayes’s inauguration. Rival governments arose claiming to recognize Tilden as the rightfully elected president. Republicans, fearing another sectional crisis, reached out to Democrats. In what became known as the Compromise of 1877, Democrats conceded the presidency to Hayes on the condition that all remaining troops would be removed from the South and the South would receive special economic favors. African Americans and radical rebulicans were trying to make everyone realize that everyone is equal, but the democrats were allowing african americans legal freedom but little more. Black Americans succeeded in getting citizenship for freed people. They then begun to fight for legal, political, and social implications of American citizen ships. This organization was created to keep the future of freed-people before the northern public. Another  non-government organization was the Freedmen's Bureau.
