Do you think its as important between teachers and their administration as it is in the classroom between students and teachers?

- Jessica Davis

Hello Sandra, Thank you for sharing the article on communication. I found it very interesting. The part that stood out to me the most is how communication is a two sided process or transfer of information. Unfortunately some teachers feel that if they presented the content that they have done their part in teaching the content. This is so far from the truth! Communication is the transfer and comprehension of the content. As we prepare for a leadership role, I think it is important for administrators to help educators understand effective communication.

Hi Sandra,
Your article made several points I agreed with concerning using communication to motivate your students, get to know them, and understand problems they may have. I also think it is important to remember, as the article points out, that communication is just as important for the student to understand our expectations, knowledge, and skills. I often use humor in the classroom. I was glad to see your article supported my theory that it makes a teacher more approachable. It ended with a good point for us all to remember. Good communication skills facilitate the fluid transmission of knowledge.
- Tracy Rees

It reminds me of our assignments weekly in this course. I have not established a method because my brain hits overload and I fail to find a starting point. I manage to read the module information then hop around until I find my direction. Huuum, I guess that is my method.
Paragraph 2. I write items everywhere then forget where I placed the written document containing the information. I also notice the author suggests multiple locations; it would be wonderful for a suggestion of a primary and backup location. I guess that is why paragraph 1 is significant.
Paragraph 3. Excellent suggestion... the power of two works wonders.
Thank you for posting this article.

Sandra B.

-----------

References

Dabbs, L.

Sandra,
Staying organized is of utmost importance for instructional supervisors, principals, and teachers. The article you shared by Lisa Dabbs,

"Let’s Not "Fall" Behind: Three Tips to Help You Stay Organized" gives practical strategies for maintaining organizational balance.

Though the author directs her suggestions to new teachers, the organizational tips can be helpful to any individual trying to stay away from being unprepared and disorganized. Create a method for organizing, write things down, and have support system with colleagues are good essentials to staying organized. Evernote is suggested as a web-based tool for storing notes, presentations, and recording messages. Utilizing Google calendar, a desk planner, and a journal are also helpful for organization.

For teachers, the purpose of being organized is to enjoy teaching and provide a positive classroom environment for their students. I agreed with the Dabbs that planning with a colleague or grade-level group is advantageous. The time spent planning is more productive with shared ideas and resources. The first tip, create your personal organization method, is more difficult to achieve. Some people are less skilled in organization then others or their personalities do not make them natural organizers. Falling behind is never a good feeling. Principals, instructional supervisors, and teachers need to support each other in ways to stay organized. Therefore the focus can more easily stay on educating the children.

Debra Hiler

Sandra,
I really enjoyed the article by OBrien, as it focused on increasing teacher voice in the decision-making process. It is important for administrators to understand that communication and collaboration must be conducted prior to making school decisions. As well, principals should value and respect their member's opinions and ideas in order to increase their participation and motivation. Therefore, the 3 step methods is an adequate way to improve working relationships and establish a positive campus culture. Thank you for sharing this great article, as it can help future leaders learn how to improve their decision-making skills.

Elyssha Enriquez
______

Reference

OBrien, A.

While initially reading this article, I felt that it did not really give me any insight into decision-making. Most of the article stated questions aimed towards the reader. After rereading the article, I felt as if it was speaking to me directly. The questions helped me to reflect on my own teaching experiences which lead to more insight on the topic. I found it very beneficial that this article included real life scenarios. I have heard other coworkers state several times "when I was a kid.." when discussing classroom management, classroom climate, student participation, etc. It is refreshing to see an article that incorporates this type of information. Teachers make hundreds of decisions a day, and focusing on the future rather than the past is the only way us teachers can make the best of every day in the classroom. Change is inevitable and being prepared is the key to success. Thanks for sharing this article! It really helped me with self-reflection.

I began reading your article about teachers changing the world. I loved it because teachers are so undervalued. I then just kept on going and read your article under it about mentoring teachers. It spoke to me as I never had a mentor teacher and I think a lot of my struggles would have been eliminated if one had been assigned to me. It also pointed out that the best mentors are not what we often think, the tenured teachers. It is often a fairly new teacher with enthusiasm, new ideas, and a willingness to share.
Thanks Sandra!
