This compromise would address the growing tension between the free and slave states. Many Southerners and northerners contributed to this issue. Henry Clay, a speaker for the house of representatives, would be the one purposing Congress to balance both parties. On March 2, 1820, Congress let Missouri join the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free state. The Missouri compromise would keep peace with both groups. It didn't solve the question of slavery within the Union. The south set a precedent for Congress to make laws concerning slavery, while Northerners disliked the law because it meant slavery was expanding into new territories. Later on, after the establishment of the law, As the westward expansion took place these issues would once again rise among the northerners and southerners as more territory was gained.

Southerners eventually would find out of the plan. Convict all those who were part of the organizations. 34 slaves were hanged including Denmark Vesey. After the events, Charlestonians would burn the church and refrain from all teachings of education to African Americans. The state assembly would pass a law prohibiting all free slaves into the state. The legislature passed the Negro Seamen Act, which placed a quarantine on any vessel from another "state or a foreign port, having on board any free negroes or persons of color." Although U.S. Circuit Court Judge William Johnson found it unconstitutional, a defiant assembly renewed the act in late 1823.

Fought from October 1835 to April 1836 both Mexico and Texan colonists. A conflict between American and Mexican settlers in Mexico. Between slavery, immigration, and customs. Mexico officially abolished slavery in Texas in 1830, and the desire of Anglo Texans to maintain the institution of slavery in Texas was also a major cause of secession. Colonists disagreed on whether the ultimate goal was independence or a return to the Mexican Constitution of 1824. The growing tensions between Mexico and Texas erupted into violence when Mexican soldiers attempt to disarm the people of Gonzales, sparking the Texan war for independence. They would rebel against the Mexican government. This led to the end of the war in the Battle of Jacinto won by Hoston's army. Texas was victorious and declared independence.

The Mexican American war was fought over and Mexico was unwilling to acknowledge that Texas was independent after the Texas revolution. They wouldn't allow Texas to join the union leading to the first war for the US in a foreign land. Or let the US proceed with its expansion out west. After many wars, Mexico's military grew weak and Santa Anna resigned from his position. So they signed the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo establishing the Rio Grande as the U.S.-Mexican border. Under the treaty, Mexico also recognized the U.S. annexation of Texas and agreed to sell California and the rest of its territory north of the Rio Grande for $15 million plus the assumption of certain damage claims.

After the Mexican-American war, an act was created to settle the tension and disagreements between the north and the south on new states being slave or free states. This act would establish California as a free state and let other states decide on themselves (Mainly New Mexico and Utah). The passing of the compromise would lead to some territories to amend the Fugitive Slave act. The act authorized local governments to seize and return people who had escaped slavery to their owners while imposing penalties on anyone who had attempted to help them gain their freedom. Many states in the south found this unfair to lose slaves. The Northern states would support the amendment of the Fugitive Slaves act.
