The catalyst for Imperialism was the Industrial Revolution, the construction of factories rose a need for more land and resources. Also different countries wanted recognition as a world power and to do that they needed many military bases scattered all over the land. Christianity was also wanted by the Europeans as the only world religion. Many countries were taken over and over time some gained independence while others still need to be liberated to this day.

The economic factors to taking over these places are the people that live there you can force into labor, you can take over the industries they may have built, and you can also take over their land to grow cash crops to sell.

There are a handful of benefits for taking over these countries, like close to sea, a decent amount of territory to add power, and land to grow crops and have monopolies on certain items. Also certain areas would make for a good spot to have a military base to keep watch on enemy countries.

By getting more land to your name, you are getting more power. The more land you have the power you do too. With the more power you have the more you can control, i.e. market prices, religion, and sometimes even government.
