Duolingo Vocabulary

I spent 45 minutes on Duolingo going through vocabulary such as practising possessive pronouns, nominative pronouns and the past and present tenses. This really helped me understand the different German vocabulary and where they are placed in more complex sentences. For example, I can now recognise how describing something in past tense changes the sentence structure in comparison to present tense, along with the added prefixes. I found Duolingo useful for testing my knowledge and think I have improved knowledge on the tenses and nouns in German.

Oxford German Dictionary: Phrasefinder

I realised I had not made good enough use of the phrasefinder in the centre of my German dictionary, and thought I should use it as a revision tool for testing myself on my current knowledge, whilst also picking up some new words and phrases to my vocabulary. For example, I found the "Meeting Up" section really helpful to add to what we had learned in the classes e.g. the question: "Wo treffen wir uns?" which I had not previously known. I added the phrases that I thought useful to my notes to overall assist my knowledge and add to what I already knew.

Learning the German Alphabet

I had been struggling with my pronunciation of some of the letters in the alphabet, and wanted to learn how to pronounce different words when there are umlauts on each of the vowels. To do this, I referred back to the German alphabet table and also watched the following video several times to have an aural resource to help assist with pronunciation. I found the video very helpful as it gave example words to help understand how to say each letter. It also showed examples of the letters with umlauts and clearly described how the sound of the letter changed with the addition of the umlaut. While watching the video I repeated the sounds back, and also wrote down what they sounded like using orthographic methods.

Masculine, feminine and Neutral Words

I spent an hour using study sets on Quizlet to practice my knowledge on masculine, feminine and neutral words such as where to use ein/eine/einen, as well as Der/die/das. I found the study sets useful, however I then created my own and added my own words that I commonly use in conversation to ensure that I could refer to them more easily. I used the "Learn" study tool on Quizlet to learn the words thoroughly, and then the "Write" tool to practice my knowledge and spelling out each word. I now feel more confident with using the correct definite articles in German.

Flashcards for Key Words and Phrases

I made flashcards for the core German vocabulary we have been learning over the past weeks, and began practising them with my boyfriend (who also learns German) to test my skills in translating from English to German and vice versa. I also got him to test my spelling when I got a word/phrase correct as an additional challenge to my knowledge. The key topics I used for my flashcards was family and describing family members, introducing myself and others (e.g. er heißt...), and objects. I now feel I have a much better understanding of German vocabulary and how common words are spelt. It was also useful to hear myself speaking the language and get more comfortable with forming sentences in practice.

Using Different Pronouns in Sentences

I had been finding describing what others are doing (present tense) difficult so I began writing down example phrases for each pronoun e.g. er/sie, wir, ich, ihr and Sie. I also wrote out a table with each pronoun and the appropriate prefixes and suffixes that are associated with them e.g. wir = -en. I then began revising off this table to assist writing more sentences using each pronouns to my list, and now feel much more confident to quickly recognise how using each pronoun changes the word and what gets added or subtracted compared to the most commonly used, "ich".

Television Programme in German

I thought watching a TV show in German would be an interesting and useful method to learn German translations from English so I decided to pick a TV show that was familiar to me; Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, as I thought I would have a slight advantage to knowing what was going on somewhat, and would not struggle as much to understand the language. I watched a couple of episodes to get used to hearing the German language, and I also had the subtitles turned on in German so I could read along with what I was hearing. I found this useful as I was able to recognise words and phrases that I had heard before, as well as picking up new vocabulary.

Google Docs Revision

I referred back to the notes on words, phrases, etc. from the German classes that I had made in several google docs folders, and decided to put them all together and use it as a revision tool. I found this helpful as it meant I could quickly find each topic when I need it in the future, as well as having one place to add my own phrases that I had learned from other resources (listed here on pallet). This took me a good couple of hours to make, however I now have a resource that is clear and quickly available to me to revise from, and I have been using it over the last few weeks since making it.
