美國大學裡開始教中文的時間不是很長。直到世界第二大戰的時候中文才開始變得比較重要。 這是因為世界第二大戰以後就是韓戰。

在韓戰的時候，美國政府看到受過中國倫理教育訓練的兵，都被訓練的很好，所以他們覺得可以一樣這樣做。

美國的教育部想訓練人才，所以他們開始在美國大學教中文。 但是，他們用為了教育和研究做原因，不是為了加强軍隊。 

起初，很少人對學中文有興趣， 因為他們大部分是過去曾經在中國的退伍老兵。 後來，隨著時間的推移，人對學習中文的興趣越來越大，變成越來越多的人想學中文。 這導致大學開始有教授教中文課。現在不但大學有教中文課， 連中學都有教中文。 中文已經成為世界上最流行的語言之一。
