In How to Read Literature like a Professor we learn that food is communion. We use eating as a way of bonding or becoming enemies. A lot is revealed about ourselves over a meal. In chapter two Meursault is seen twice eating alone, once standing up seeing no point in using a chair. This shows how truly alone he is in the world, how he lacks connections wit people, how he is a stranger to what we consider a normal world

In Chapter 4, it related to the violence presentation. "you used me, you used me. I'll teach you to use me" pg.35 Ramon was hitting his girlfriend in this chapter. She ran outside to get the police, which lead into a worse fight between the two. The police also slapped Ramon and that also relates to it. "next time you'll know better not to clown around a police men" pg.36 It also related to the presentation "Geography Matters" The location in the book is Algiers. It seems like by the description of the place is that it's a very pretty place. "I'd left my window open and the summer night air flowing over our brown bodies felt good" pg.35 Throughout the whole book Part 1, they were on the beach.
There is one more chapter in the How to Read Literature (Chapter 16) that this chapter relates to. "Sex Part part.1" The whole book you can tell Meursalt doesn't have the love Marie has for him. He has more lust than love. They had the connection of sex but not through love. "A minute later she asked me if I loved her. I told her it didn't mean anything but that I didn't think so." pg.35 // Their relationship is all physical and not emotional. When he went to prison, that's when Marie and him cut off because they were ripped from each other and wasn't able to feel physically. There was no type of love mentally.

Tracy: Literary Devices .
The a used many types of literary devices throughout this first chapter. One that is used within the first few lines is Imagery. Example: "with the glare off the road and from the sky, the reek of gasoline, and the jolts". Another prominent literary device in chapter one, is simile: " were as thin as rakes."

syntax- Meursault uses short and to the point sentence .This supports the idea that he's the type of person who doesn't really care or give too much thought to things.
example- "i caught the toe o'clock bus. it was very hot."
"i was tired"

Meursalt is made to not have as much emotion as a other people in the story so we can see his world from his logical thinking, not emotions that he seem to lack throughout chapter one.

"He was moving towards the casket when I stopped him . He said, You don't want me to? I answered No. This stood out to me why wouldn't he want to see his own blood, he's own mother for one more final time .It makes me think he doesn't really care about he's mother at all. I can understand if your so hurt that your mother died but he was just so nonchalant about the whole death." Maman died today" He was so Blane when he told us this it was like it was common.

"I even had the impression that the dead woman lying in front of them didn't mean anything to them. But I think now that that was a false impression."
Meursault seems disconnected at first by saying the dead woman like it's not his own mother. You can tell he does care though because the fact that he wants the others to care suggests that he loved his mother at least a little.

the book if about absurdism and in chapter one it said how Merusalt asked for a leave and his boss was unhappy about this request but he would regret his decision when he sees Merusalt is in mourning. This shows the idea of absurdism.

Miracle - Quest
Mersault's journey to the old people's home is an example of a quest. Chapter 1 of HTRLLP talks about questing and what makes a quest a quest.
-The quester is Mersault.
-The place to go is Marengo.
-Reason for going is his mother's funeral.
-Challenges on the way would be the heat and the long ride there.
His real reason is his mother's funeral.

Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory is shown in Chapter 2, with The Crucifix, it's obviously represents Christianity. It also represents the Afterlife, society's acceptance of it. It also represents everything that Meursault does not believe in. Meursault shut downs the notion that his life must have any rational explanation or. significance. He doesn't see a reason to search for meaning.
This story is shown in colors. Meursault shows attention to colors of the sky, sun rays, the beach, the ocean, stuff like that. Like in this book, green is usually associated with happy moments, in which we know, cause he says, " The sky was green, I felt good." Red colors are associated with anger or sex, and are linked with Raymond and his ex-mistress.

Depending on its intensity, the sun either makes Meursault sleepy, angry, happy, or resentful. It's also perfectly reasonable to claim that Meursault is like an element of nature himself. After all, he claims at the end of the text that he's found a kinship with world

In How to Read Literature like a Professor we learn that weather represents more than soon to come rain. We learn that weather represents mood and emotion. In chapter two the rain has passed and the skies seem clear, representing Meursalt's thoughts on his Mother, that she is dead and everything is now back to the way things were.

Jacob Fawcett-How "How to Read Literature like a Professor" connects to chapter two.
In How to Read Literature like a Professor we learn that food is communion. We use eating as a way of bonding or becoming enemies. A lot is revealed about ourselves over a meal. In chapter two Meursault is seen twice eating alone, once standing up seeing no point in using a chair. This shows how truly alone he is in the world, how he lacks connections wit people, how he is a stranger to what we consider a normal world

the point of view in chapter 2 switches between first person, second person, and 3rd person ominission. " I walked into a very large room brightened by a huge bay window." This sentence is 1st person, he is talking about himself and what his thoughts are with words like "I". "Marie was surrounded by Moorish womenand found herself between two visitors:" This is 3rd person ominission, as he uses words like "Marie" and "herself". Then as he starts to have dialogue a lot of 2nd person point of view is being used, "Are you all right? Do you everything you want?". These three different points of view are throughout the chapter and also kind of throughout the book.

"Then he explained that he'd heard about Maman's death but that it was one of those things that was bound to happen sooner or later. Normally in this novel Meursault will agree with people just for the sake of agreeing and making things less awkward, however, he seems to understand what Raymond said and genuinely agrees with him. Meursault we could say is blind but being blind wouldn't be literally, it would be as in he is blind from his heart and that makes him notice things without knowing what those feelings are. For example when Meursault helps out Raymond by making himself a witness for him but he doesn't do it from the heart he just does it.

In Chapter 4, the theme which is being used is existentialism. This means people searching for the meaning where there is none. This describes how Salamano feels about a significant person being upset about his mother. He feels that can

in chapter 5 salamano said" the dog's real sickness was old age, and there's no cure for old age."
this is a metaphor because he is saying that there is no way you can avoid death. its a disease that has no cure.

In this chapter, Salamano talks about the skin disease of his dog which he lost. He got his dog outof loneliness after his wife died. This connects to the disease section of How To Read Like Professor as Salamano goes through his journey with the support of his dog which reflects his own skin disease.

2. Literary Devices
   1. Imagery: "We had to cross a small plateau which overlooks the sea and then drops steeply down the beach. It was covered in yellowish rocks and whitest asphodels set against the already hard blue sky"
   2. Tone: "He left with Masson and I stayed to explain to the women what happened. Madame Masson was crying and Marie was vary pale. I didn't like having to explain to them, so I shut up, smoked a cigarette and looked at the sea" Mersault's tone is very disinterested and annoyed, disliking have to explain events to others.
   3. Point Of View: "I had the impression Raymon knew where he was going," First person point of view
