An effective strategy that builds relationships with families is to listen to the parents. It's important to listen to the parents, they know their child pretty well. Another strategy that builds relationships with families is to smile when you see parents and learn their names. They both go hand in hand. That's the first step in starting a relationship with parents. You want them to feel welcomed and they're important, they're they people who you will talk to and count on.

Some effective strategies to build positive relationships with families include meeting the individual needs of families, bringing the home languages and family's funds of knowledge into the classroom, authentic and flexible communication, and building trust. In order to establish positive relationships we need to individualize and understand very family's needs. We also need to design a classroom space that invites families into the classroom. These are ways to build trust with families, and I believe trust is the foundation for positive relationships.

I believe one of the most effective strategies when it comes to facilitating positive relationships with families is ensuring all parties are comfortable before any progression can take place. When parents don’t feel comfortable, they are likely to filter their thoughts and feelings, which won’t have any benefit on anyone. Some of these conversations may take place over-the-phone, or in the parent’s home- While conversing with our parents, we need to effectively LISTEN and DIGEST the info, before we make any sound decisions/ assumptions- And if we are ever unsure on anything as a teacher/ educator, admit that, as the parents shouldn’t feel any less knowledgeable than us, especially if we are seeking new knowledge within the appropriate content! If we work with the parents, they will work with us! 😊

An effective strategy that helps build positive relationships with families is to consistently reach out and converse with them. Often families associate phone calls home with a negative behavior their child did. If teachers called more often with positive news about their children, it would help build a positive relationship. Also, it might motivate parents to contact the teacher and become involved. Another strategy to build positive relationships with the families is to incorporate the families culture into the classroom. Families would feel welcomed into the classroom and the students would see part of themselves represented in their environment. With a more welcoming environment, families would feel more welcome to approach teachers.

Effective strategies to build positive relationships with families is communicating the positive and negative. Unfortunately, when parents receive phone calls from schools or teachers, it’s usually about something negative. However, we as educators can change that by also following up with positive information about the child. Another effective strategy can be understand each family's expectations and views about their involvement. Many families are either stay-at-home parents or work all day. We as educators have to respect how involved they are with their child and support them as much as possible.

By allowing yourself to be available, parents feel welcome to share their expectations or desires for their child's education.

I believe a strong teacher-parent relationship is especially important because young children start to become more independent and benefit as well as feel more confident. Some strategies to build positive relationships with families would be to provide opportunities for parents to help inside/outside the classroom. As well as to always send reports of the child's progress, informing parents of their child's achievements or maybe strengths in the class. Teachers can also use phone calls, or emails if the parents cannot make time to visit the classroom between conferences to communicate regularly regarding their child. Another strategy would be to ask open-ended questions to understand the parents that may not be open to sharing information so that they feel comfortable enough to communicate while not assuming anything. Lastly, providing resources for families because not everyone communicates in the same language as well as allowing the families to participate by listening to their opinions/input regarding their child.

I believe strong relationships between the teacher and caregiver is so important because children will be better supported. Children are learning to be more independent, communication skills and how to interact with the world. Strategies that can be applied to aid this experience for them is having positive relationships with their families, understanding their background/culture/beliefs and always sending reports or observations you notice in the classroom. There are many ways to interact, share experiences and developmental growth stages with the caregivers, so they can continue to work on it at home and in the classroom setting.
