"The valley of ashes is bounded on one side by a small foul river, and, when the drawbridge is up to let barges through, the passengers on waiting trains can stare at the dismal scene for as long as half an hour. There is always a halt there of at least a minute, and it was because of this that I first met Tom Buchanan's mistress" (24).

When this quote was used in the story when Tom took Nick to the valley of ashes to meet his mistress. Tom talks to George about a car he is planning to sell him, showing he has a cover that gives him a reason to continue to come back to the garage. Tom get ready to leave after Myrtle comes down from upstairs so Tom can tell her to meet him at the train. They then go to their apartment for the rest of the evening.

Character and Plot Discussion

The characters and plot events that most closely align with this symbol are Tom and Myrtle, along with their relationship. Myrtle is described as not pretty in the story which ties in well with the Valley of Ashes because that is also descibed as gloomy and dark. Although Tom's appearance does not connect to the Valley of Ashes, his personality does. He cheats on his wife, but later gets mad at Daisy for cheating on him.

Theme Discussion

The theme that relates to this symbol is lies and deceit. This is because Tom always meets his mistress at her husbands garage and plays off a story that he wants to do business with him. George continues to ask when Tom is going to send over this car and Tom continues to make excuse after excuse, lie after lie. George never suspects Tom is taking his wife out time and time again.
