The pilgrims risked their lives in America because they wanted to create a better life for themselves and knew that wouldn't be possible in England. One of the reasons why the pilgrims is left was for religious freedom and to escape the corruption of the English Church. Separatists who went against the Church of England were often persecuted because of their stance. Along with religious oppression, the people of England were facing dark times. Famine and death was rampant due to natural disasters and a dry spell that killed most crops and cattle.

The puritans of Salem valued simplicity. They lived very modest lives. The people of salem also were religious people and promoted suppressing a person's desires, they felt their desires were a pathway to sin. Hard work was also given high value. Because of this the American dream of the people was limited to working a laborious job, a pastor or as a merchant.

This time period encouraged reasoning. Many began to value a person's reasoning and even questioned some of the teachings of the clergy. The people valued free thinking, liberty and independence from Britain. These values are what led to the American Revolution and a new form of government. The American dream was to protect liberty and freedom.
