Warming Centers 

When temperatures are at 32ºF or below, DFSS activates warming areas at our six community service centers. These warming centers operate Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  

Chicago Parks District facilities and Chicago Public Libraries also provide spaces available to the public during their typical business hours.  Click here to view a map of more than 190 public facilities serving as warm indoor spaces citywide, and find the location nearest you. 

Seniors are also welcome at any of DFSS’s 21 senior centers. DFSS partners with OEMC to use robocalls to inform seniors of key information regarding how to stay safe during extreme weather. Visit Chicago.gov/Seniors for senior center locations and hours.  

Warming Center hours may be extended, along with activation of other supports, when the Office of Emergency Management and Communications enacts the City’s Emergency Operations Plan for extreme cold conditions as defined by the National Weather Service.” Please visit the OEMC website for up-to-date information during extreme weather events.

·         To request a shelter placement.  

·         To request a well-being check for seniors and unhoused neighbors.  

·         To report inadequate heat in a residential building. 

What to Expect At DFSS Warming Centers:

·        The warming areas are available for all residents needing safe refuge and relief from extreme cold weather. 

·        Unless specifically indicated, DFSS warming centers are closed when temperatures exceed 32 degrees, on weekends, holidays, and during evening hours. 

·        Under extreme cold conditions as defined by the National Weather Service and Communicated by the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications, warming center hours of operation at 10 S. Kedzie Ave. may be extended.

·        Optional face coverings to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other airborne viruses are available at the community services centers upon request.

UChicago Medicine Ingalls locations offering free mental health screenings in October for National Depression and Health Screening Month

The free screenings aim to raise awareness for depression and anxiety and to help remove stigma and barriers to access that community members struggling with mental health face.

During National Depression and Health Screening Month in October, University of Chicago Medicine Ingalls locations will offer free screenings for symptoms of depression and anxiety for people 12 years and older. Screenings are taking place on the following dates and times, and no appointment is necessary:

• Thursday, Oct. 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at UChicago Medicine at Ingalls – Flossmoor (19550 Governors Hwy., Flossmoor, IL 60422)

• Thursday, Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at UChicago Medicine at Ingalls – Tinley Park (6701 W. 159^th St., Tinley Park, IL 60477)

• Tuesday, Oct. 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at UChicago Medicine at Ingalls – Calumet City (1600 Torrence Ave., Calumet City, IL 60409)

When temperatures in Cook County are expected to dip to unsafe levels, the County's Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security provides an updated list of warming centers for residents to protect themselves and their families. 

Residents should also keep the following tips in mind through the cold winter months:

• Never use your oven for heat.

• Never bring charcoal or gas grills indoors (they are a carbon monoxide hazard).

• Make sure all portable heaters are unplugged when not in use.

• Use electric space heaters with extreme caution – avoid placing them near curtains or other flammable materials and turn them off before going to bed.

• Keep heat at adequate levels or leave faucets open with a slight drip to prevent pipes from freezing.

• Keep moving. Your body generates its own heat when you engage in physical activities.

Some SNAP customers must meet new work requirements due to federal government changes to who qualifies as an Able-Bodied Adult Without Dependents (ABAWD).

The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) has been posting important updates and information for ABAWDs, regarding SNAP resources, on social media.

Customers can find out if they are an ABAWD, check if they are already meeting work requirements, see whether or not they are exempt from the new requirements – and find the proper form to declare an exemption, by using the screener here.

Customers who must meet the new requirements can also find out how to meet them by working, volunteering, and/or participating in a training or education program and can find resources here.

The CONSTRUCT Youth Academy is a paid, pre‑career exposure program designed to build awareness of careers in the utility and energy sector. The program introduces students to entry‑level roles and career opportunities within the industry. The curriculum focuses on increasing students’ knowledge, awareness, and workforce readiness across a variety of roles, with the goal of strengthening pathways into ComEd adult workforce programs and long‑term career opportunities.

CHICAGO — Today, Mayor Brandon Johnson joined the Mayor’s Office of Community Engagement (MOCE) and the Office of Budget and Management (OBM) to announce the Mayor’s Office 2027 Budget Engagement Roundtable events. This year’s roundtables will extend engagement through a new Budget Engagement Scenario Game, an interactive exercise inviting participants to collaborate to develop shared priorities within a simulated budget framework, encouraging thoughtful discussion and a deeper understanding of fiscal decision-making. This series of dynamic public meetings allows Chicagoans to engage in conversations surrounding community priorities for the upcoming budgetary cycle while sharing ideas shaping the future of the City.

"Building safe and affordable communities requires meaningful partnership with the people who call our city home,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “These roundtables create an important opportunity for residents to help guide the investments that will strengthen our communities for generations to come. From public safety and youth opportunities to housing, mental health services, infrastructure, and economic development, our administration is committed to centering public voices in the budget process while ensuring City operations serve the needs of our residents.”

Building upon budget engagement outreach from previous years, Mayor Johnson will host five roundtable events across Chicago to welcome input from community members. Four of the events will welcome the general public and one will focus on input from youth ages 14-24.

These roundtables present Chicagoans the opportunity to speak directly with City officials and share which services matter most, what programs should be prioritized, and where spending can be realigned.

The interactive Budget Engagement Scenario game, developed in partnership with the Great Cities Institute at the University of Illinois Chicago, aims to deepen public understanding of the City’s annual budget process by helping residents explore the real-world tradeoffs involved in funding City programs and services.

“People feel the impacts of City budgets but rarely get the chance to wrestle with the choices behind them,” said Thea Crum, Associate Director of Neighborhoods Initiative at the Great Cities Institute. “By working through the simulation, participants will discover that budgeting involves more than line items and spreadsheets. It’s about values, tradeoffs, and what kind of city we want to build. The game creates a shared space for learning, conversation, and collective problem-solving, helping residents engage with the budget process in a more meaningful and informed way.”

Residents are welcome to engage and learn more by visiting the FY2027 Budget Engagement website and reviewing the City’s Budget 101 video. Feedback can be provided through the Public Comment Portal and by completing the Budget Engagement Survey, available on the 2027 Budget Engagement Website.

At all public roundtable events except the final youth session, a City Resource Fair will be held beginning one hour prior to the event. During this time, residents can meet with representatives from City departments and explore the range of services available.

All events will be broadcast live on the City’s social media platforms for those unable to attend in person. ASL will be available at all events. Closed captioning (CC) will be offered at Harry S. Truman College and Spanish interpretation will be possible at Malcolm X College.

ACT Now and STEM Next Opportunity Fund invite afterschool and youth-service programs across Illinois to participate in an exciting statewide STEM learning initiative focused on Nature & Sustainability. Participating sites will implement five engaging, hands-on STEM lessons designed for youth in grades 3-8 designed by Verizon Wireless. Lessons explore environmental literacy, sustainability, and real-world STEM concepts while inspiring youth to become problem-solvers and innovators. The initiative aims to reach thousands of Illinois youth through high-quality out-of-school-time STEM experiences.  

Join us for this Train-the-Trainer style session where participants will:

1. Be introduced to the Nature & Sustainability program and corresponding requirements.

2. Register for their Verizon accounts to access the curriculum.

3. Review Activities 1, 2 and 3 in Learning Journey 2;

4. Deep dive into facilitating Activities 4 and 5 in Learning Journey 2;

5. Engage in a Q&A session with the curriculum writer.
