What is your definition of innovation? Once you reflect upon that, have you had teachers (names are not important) that you would consider innovative? What did he/she do (explain the activity). Thanks! - Mrs. C.

Innovation is when someone comes up with new, educated ideas that are accustomed to today's needs. I have had only a few teachers that are innovative in their classrooms; mostly my Pre-AP and AP classes. Some activities involve student based learning, where the students were told to research the unit, and basically teach themselves which for the Pre-AP students, did not work. I've also done a Cell Dating activity, where each student got assigned a part of the cell in order to learn the different parts of the cells, which did work. Based on my experiences, student based learning did not work, whereas projects did.

I believe innovation is when one comes up with a different way of doing something and that promotes creativity. I have only had a handful of teachers that have used innovative learning. One teacher had us complete a project where we got to design a board game with a group using the assigned body system. I found this to be not only incredibly fun, but also extremely educational. I have also had a teacher who let us plan a trip in order to understand how budgeting works. This was taking something so practical and putting in an easy way for students to understand. I have also had a couple of teachers that have made up mnemonic devices or short songs to help the class remember the state capitals and the phases of mitosis. Personally, this was a life saver for me because my memory isn't the best, but when music and rhyming is involved it is easier to remember. I believe all of these tactics were smart ways of getting students to learn, and they all worked.

Innovation is the idea of going somewhere, in practically any field, that no one has ever gone before. It's the idea of creating a new setting, environment, or activity that challenges the brain in an unfamiliar way. The most innovative approach to learning I've seen, but not experienced, at the high school, is the formation of the Eagle Tech environment in west campus. This is an environment where open classrooms with desks on wheels, marker board walls, and project-based-learning are all important aspects of the learning environment. They utilize technology (in positive, educational ways) to create a more welcoming and engaging environment. While PBL is not my preferred method of learning, it's proven to be the case for current and rising 9th graders.

Innovation is coming up with new and exciting ways do to do something. In school for example, having a new way to teach the material to make it fun, not only for the students but the teacher as well. I have had a couple teachers succeed at this while others have tried and failed while a lot did not even try at all.

Innovation is being able to take somethihg that you know and building on top of it. Like writing you start simple and you are able to build on top of the simple rules to create your own stories or to get a message across on a page that everyone can clearly understand. Innovation is something that takes time to do it doesnt happen over night. You have to learn and build one skill or education on one subject. Innovation is taking the time to advance your own knowledge so that it can be expressed to others or used to advance your life or career
