Ivor Gurney was a very depperessed person and he even considred suicide although eveything changed for him when he decided to join the army. Rats were everywhere feeding themselves with dead bodies, swamping with flies during the summer and food was horrible. The revolution happened when thousands of workers in St. Petersburg filled the street and the Tsar's troop refused to fire at them and instead they joined the demonstration. Austria-Hungary blamed the Serbian government for the attack. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Within a week, Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain, and Serbia had lined up against Austria Hungary, and Germany. 

The late nineteenth century was a time for military competition between the major European powers. It became a cultural belief that was is good for nations. Germany took the chance to expand its navy but the British always maintained naval superiority.

The Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance formed a web of alliances. The Triple Alliance (1882) linked Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The Triple Entente (1907) linked France, Britain, and Russia. 

The imperial competition also led the countries to adopt alliances. They brought nations into conflict and agreement. Germany invaded Belgium and France due to imperial ambitions and the expansion of the British and French has led to the rise of industrialism and the pursuit of new markets.
