Nath has been dreaming about becoming an astronaut since Marilyn left. " He began to refer to the astronauts - Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan_ by first name, as if they were friends."(pg.133). Nath affinity for space began as a coping mechanism for his mother's absences. Nath remained true to being an astronaut and got himself into Havard.

Fears and Anxieties

"Though Nath dreamed of MIT, or Carnegie Mellon, of Caltech- he'd written pamphlets- he knew there was only one place his father would approve of: Havard." Nath's biggest fear was not getting into Harvard. This is the reason he was mad at Lydia for hiding his letter. He thought going somewhere prestigious would make his dad proud of him.

Pressure

James put a lot of pressure on Nath to make friends. When James comes back from Louisa he takes his frustration out on Nath. " You're home all day. Do you have any friends at all?" (pg.198). This statement doesn't affect Nath in the moment because he knows how his dad feels about him. This connects to how eager James was for Nath to make friends at the swimming pool, Nath got teased for being Asian. After that experience he gave up on Nath being sociable

Parents hopes

James hoped Nath would be the opposite of who he was when he was younger. " James would think back to this day in the swimming pool, this first disappointment in his son, this first and most painful puncture in his fatherly dreams."(pg.92)

At the pool instead of Nath making friends and enjoying himself, he faced racism. James sees this as Nath not being able to take a joke and taking a toll on his social life. His hopes for Nath being a popular kid shifted to Lydia.

Grandparents

Nath has so much pressure from his dad to be liked by others because James never felt like anyone would like him due to his parents working at the school. " In his own schooldays, he'd been embarrassed to ask classmates to his house, afraid that they'd recognize his mother from the lunch line, of his father from ,mopping the hallway."(pg 89)

Nath's grandparents 'jobs had cost him a relationship with his father. James saw Nath as a redo of his childhood and he failed to meet his expectations.

Outside influence

The outside influence of Jack created a timid and resenting Nath. The teasing at the pool could have caused Nath to become distant with the kids at school making him a loner. This is what drove James away from his son. Another influence was Louisa, Nath figuring out that Louisa and James had an affair and created huge tension in the family because he told his mom about the affair. Now the Lee's must put their family back together after everything that has happened.
