There will also be a more diverse group of volunteers from different backgrounds. Guards will have strict(er) guidelines of what they can/can't do or say to the prisoners. There could also be better restrictions on abuse management and stopping how much power the guards have physically in order to prevent permanent damage.

First, the "prisoners" should not be dehumanized to the point that they had been in the original experiment. It also needs to be made clear to the guards that any form of abuse will not be tolerated and is not okay. Also, the person running the experiment should not let themselves be apart of the experiment apart from observing it. Besides that, I believe the experiment could be carried out basically the same way as before.

It would take place in a more realistic prison with the ability to go outside. The guards would not be given anything to use as a weapon and neither would the prisoners. There would be an outside observation team who knew when to help and when to not help the people. The peoples families would also be aware of what was happening to make sure that everyone was ok with it.

I would also add in an 3rd party observer that is not affiliated with the research, which is dedicated to insuring safe and ethical cooperation with in the experiment and to prevent any lasting harm on any subjects. I believe it would also be beneficial to factor in things like "yard time" in-order to give prisoners a outlet from the constant supervision and harassment from the guards. - Canyon Unkel

John Paulenich III - We could redesign the experiment by changing the participation type and group. Increase diversity while maintaining the purpose of the experiment and ensure that it is voluntary. Additionally throughout the experiment it is necessary that each of the participants be able to withdraw at any point in time. Last change that is a must is that the experiment controllers must not be too involved in the experiment itself. If they are in the experiment themselves they risk not being right of mind to control the experiment properly.

Marisa Maxwell:

The Stanford prison experiment has many flaws. The prisoners were not informed about what they had gotten theirselves into. The prisoners were at risk because of the guards abusing their power and started abusing them mentally and physically. That goes against the ethical law of no harm to subjects. The experiment lacks proper ENFORCED rules. Even though the guards were told that they cannot physically harm the prisoner they did so anyway without any proper repercussions. The whole experiment needs to be monitored by someone who is not in the experiment. Zimbardo himself was way too involved in the experiment and could not see how it was flawed. He was not going to end the experiment unless he was told to. To make the experiment better the participants need to be FULLY debriefed and informed about what was going on. They need to be allowed to leave whenever. Participants need to be debriefed. Someone should constantly monitor and enforce said rules. Zimbardo should not be as involved because he too became changed by the roles.

For example, using informed consent they could gather a group of individuals willing and informed into this experiment. Setting a group of guidelines for the experiment could also help realign abusive behaviors of the guards. When making slight rules or guidelines, people are more willing to follow the rules instead of acting solely independently. This would cause more positive feedback into research but also more positive members. Overall, the experiment could be more replicable with more information.- Maddox H.

Having some sort of easy way to get out like a button so they may leave whenever while also strictly enforcing the rules with anyone that breaks them being either thrown out of the experiment or possibly arrested for assault. Giving the guards more safe alternatives for what they had like a easily breakable baton allows for more safety if someone does break the rules. One easy aspect that can be changed is having a less violent start to the experiment that isn’t as public either like just having them come to where the experiment is taking place. Another way you could get this data is by observing how people change by watching one specific prisoner and guard in a real prison and seeing how they change from before, during, and after.

Although many things about the Stanford prison experiment could be changed, personally, the two biggest changes should be that if the fake guards abused their power and got too power hungry, as soon as they start abusing the fake prisoners and before they start using psychological torture on the prisoners, the experiment should stop immediately so to fix the flaw of potential harm to subject and to debrief more on the procedures and what else would go on during the experiment to the volunteer, before it commenced.
