Letting My Dreams Take Flight

My overall purpose is to learn how to fly a plane. Flying a plane will allow me to soar through the air like an eagle without a concern in the world. Learning to fly will literally make me feel like I’m on top of the world. It will enable to feel freedom being able to fly across the globe discovering new places. This topic interests me because this is something I’ve always wanted to do growing up. Growing up in a family full of relatives that are pilots has influenced my passion to fly a plane. This is necessary because my ultimate career goal is to become a pilot and fly commercially.

I will benefit from this project because I can already be ahead of the game when I enrol in flight school. Since I would already know how to fly a plane, I would able to skip the basics and only focus on getting my flying hours completed. My family will also benefit from this project because the family tree of pilots can be continued.

I have had no previous experience in this area aside from the sit-down conversations I would have with my uncle, who flew commercially for UPS, about flying planes. This is something beyond what I already do in life because I have never been inside the cockpit of an airplane. All the controls would be a blur to me but as I gain more knowledge and experience, the buttons and controls would be second nature to me.

I have contacted my cousin and scheduled some flying time with him at the flight school Aspen Flying Club down in Centennial. We will go to his flight training school and he’s going to teach me how to fly. My cousin is Commercial rated, with CFI rating, instrument, and multi-engine rating. The only issue I've run into so far is that since he is also in school, working, and has other students as well he rarely has any free time but manage to squeeze me in his schedule. We have figured out a time that works for both of us. I have learned that the process of my project is going to take a little bit of time.

Date: 2/18
On this day, I focused on ground reference maneuvers, turn around points, s-turns, touch and go's, and cross wind takeoff. Ground reference maneuvers are flight principals that combine the four fundamentals of flight using houses and roads. Turn around points helps keep flight level altitude while in a steep turn considering wind direction. S-turns are pretty much the same thing as turn around points, but these help with the airport traffic pattern. Touch and go's are repeated to practice with flying. Cross wind takeoffs are taking off while the wind is blowing in the opposite direction of where you're taking off.

Date: 3/5
On this day, we did an engine failure to emergency landing simulation. Engine failures happen a lot in the aviation industry and pilots have to be trained in situations like this. My instructor(cousin) took out the power of the plane at a random moment during the flight, and I had to go through the engine failure checklist. First, I had to trim the airplane to glide at 70 knots then continue throughout the checklist to try to restart the engine. If that doesn't work, then I would have to find an empty spot to land like a field of grass, but I was able to successfully restart the engine.
