Do this- In the padlet below, answer these questions:

1. What is your own perceived ability in math? Is it a strength for you? Why or why not?

2. What were your thoughts when you watched the video clip from the movie "Gifted." Can you make connections to quantitative giftedness in your experience? by Jessica Zimmerman

I was always good at math. In elementary school, they had me go to the grade above my grade for math. That was great until I got to sixth grade. Then they had no place for me to go, so they had me volunteer to work in the office at math time.

My thoughts when I watched this is that is really important to provide appropriate education for our gifted students.

I didn't realize that it was probably a gifted attribute, but the new learning that I am receiving through the gifted courses allows me reflection time.

As for the movie clip, I believe that sometimes teachers aren't aware of the differences between students who are bright vs. the gifted learner. That was certainly a moment that this teacher realized the student is gifted in math.

The way I perceive my own abilities in Math has changed over the years. For many years I just thought I wasn't good at Math and didn't enjoy it. Once I could figure out the why and it started making sense to me my self perception has increased. The video reminded me of some of my students who don't just need more work, they need something different.

My own perceived ability in math is that I was strong until about high school and Algebra 2. I think I have average to slightly above average math abilities but I was always a hard worker and a perfectionist that wanted straight A’s. So, those characteristics probably masked an average quantitative brain until the more difficult formula came into the curriculum and if I couldn’t understand it after a few attempts, I actually started to give up. I’m great at lower end math for real life when it comes to personal finance, compound interest, and investing.

My thoughts watching the video was actually on how the teacher was bent on humiliating the girl with math questions she thought she couldn’t answer. As a teacher, I have had a few students with extremely high quantitative skills. At the high school level, they are usually zoned out from boredom but at the elementary level, I have experienced this strength with physical overexcitability and inability to contain themselves as their brain is several steps ahead of the class.

I would say I am fairly strong in math. However, I do not enjoy mental math because I prefer when I can map out and check my answers. I tend to be a visual learner. For the movie clip, I thought it was extremely impressive that the student could do such complicated math problems mentally. It definitely demonstrates that she is able to fully understand the formulas and patterns on how to find a solution. I have not worked with a student with quantitative giftedness but I hope I get to with my first class.

I will say that math is not a strong suit for me. I was always an English/ History/Social Studies type of person. I did well in math until I got into HS and then things got pretty difficult for me. I also had teachers who really liked to put people on the spot when they didn't know the answer, further influencing my decision to be afraid and even start to hate math. I had to take very little math in college because of my majors. I was relieved. I did teach math for awhile when I taught elementary school and even then I was a bit intimidated. I was afraid a kid would show me up (kind of like what you see in "Gifted"). I grew up with classmates like that. I teach only English now and am very comfortable there. I teach 6,7,8 Honors ELA. I know I have gifted math students but because I don't teach it, I really haven't see what they can do. I do greatly admire this strength. Unfortunately my son is terrified of math like I am. So much so that we think it might be a part of what is keeping him from returning to college to complete a degree. My husband is strong in math. My daughter gets good grades but she has to try hard in that area. My son is afraid of it, he also had a really weird math foundation because they were switching around how they taught math when he was in elementary school. We also think this is part of why his foundation is not very strong.
