Purpose: The legislative branch is made up of the House and Senate, known collectively as the Congress. Among other powers, the legislative branch makes all laws, declares war, regulates interstate and foreign commerce and controls taxing and spending policies.

Senate: The Senate has the sole power to confirm those of the President's appointments that require consent, and to provide advice and consent to ratify treaties. There are, however, two exceptions to this rule: the House must also approve appointments to the Vice Presidency and any treaty that involves foreign trade.

House: The House has several powers assigned exclusively to it, including the power to initiate revenue bills, impeach federal officials, and elect the President in the case of an Electoral College tie.

Qualifications: Members of the House are elected every two years and must be 25 years of age, a U.S. citizen for at least seven years, and a resident of the state (but not necessarily the district) they represent. The Constitution sets three qualifications for service in the U.S. Senate: age (at least thirty years of age); U.S. citizenship (at least nine years); and residency in the state a senator represents at time of election.

Separation of Powers: The legislative branch makes the laws

Checks and Balances: the President in the executive branch can veto a law, but the legislative branch can override that veto with enough votes. The legislative branch has the power to approve Presidential nominations, control the budget, and can impeach the President and remove him or her from office.

Leaders: Senate-The current leaders are Senators Chuck Schumer (D) of New York and Mitch McConnell (R) of Kentucky.
House of Rep- Kevin McCarthy (speaker of the house) is the leading figure in the house of reps (democrat)

Current Event: Congress Returns to Try to Prevent a Government Shutdown While the GOP Weighs an Impeachment Inquiry
