The harsh conditions that they were put through resulted to the loss of many lives of Australian soldiers.
From 1131 Australian soldiers in Ambon, only 352 survived and returned home.

Survivors were freed from camps all across Asia in 1945. Some of these survivors were freed from where they were initially captured, others from camps in Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and more. Prisoners survived due to a multitude of factors: military discipline, individual initiative, stealing from guards, and relying on their mates. They all needed hope, strength, and luck. https://www.awm.gov.au/sites/default/files/exhibitions/stolenyears/images/rc/RC00974.pdf

The chance to fight had been denied. Pride in their fighting abilities had abruptly turned to frustration and anger, or simply the inability to comprehend.
