Since the city-states of Germany spoke a common language they were able to accomplish loads of things. When traveling to other city-states, citizens didn't have to worry about a language barrier when trying to purchase anything. They were also able to understand the laws of each city-state because they were all written in the same language.

Before the Thirty Years War, Lutheranism was practiced under the Habsburg Empire in northern German states. After the Holy Roman Empire was destroyed, Lutheranism spread throughout the states. Lutheranism spreading the Protestant faith could eventually lead to conflict since the region was predominantly Catholic.

This rivalry between the larger city-states could have both positive and negative effects on the rest of the city-states. On one hand, when the other city-states had to choose to either have a relationship with either of the two states it brought more unity and allowed for the states to have greater militaries. On the other hand this internal conflict could lead to more wars which in turn could destroy the city-states just like the Holy Roman Empire.
