Introduction

In chapter 6 of Ratliff's "Every Song Ever", he explores the merits of repeating a single note multiple times in succession. Whereas most solos and pieces are constantly shifting in tone and pitch, sometimes, a song may take one single pitch and focus solely on it. By emphasizing a single note in this fashion, the artist explores it from every possible angle and really brings the listener to consider that note's role in a piece in a way that simply wouldn't happen if the note was only played once. Repetition such as this promotes the idea that each note in a song is important to the song's overall meaning by putting a great amount of emphasis on only a single note. A note can have many different meanings within a piece depending on the chords being played underneath it, and by having the melody play a monotone part, it shifts the focus from the melodic instruments over to the accompaniment and highlights how the changes in their parts alter the melody.
