‘Looking for player two’ (looking title) follows the struggle of Amanda, a Swedish girl who recently immigrated to Brisbane. Amanda tries to make friends and connections through physical interactions but feels that she is only forming superficial friendships leading to a feeling of loneliness and depression. Finally, after a chance encounter, she finds meaningful connections through a digital medium and a shared passion in the form of online video gaming.

Logline: Seeking Player Two follows the internal monologue and struggles of Amanda, a Swedish girl settling into life in Brisbane, Australia. Making new friends is hard and finding true connections in a superficial world is daunting. After being betrayed by her work friends, Amanda finds a true connection with Player Two through their shared passion of video games.

Amanda, a Swedish country girl from Gislaved departs for an internship in Brisbane, Australia. Amanda has never left Sweden before and is excited about the prospect of a new adventure and making new friends. She finds an apartment to herself near her workplace, settles into work, acclimates herself to her new city, joins the gym and starts interacting with her work colleagues, attempting to make friends.

Amanda is a country girl, with her whole life spent in her small town in Sweden. The friends she has accumulated have been with her since primary school and she has an extended family of many cousins. She has close ties to the people in her life and has never known anything different, she has never really had to make new friends. She is now in her 20s and has finished university studies. After getting a small taste of adventure from travelling to and from University in a neighbouring town she decides to take a huge step out of her comfort zone and complete an internship in Australia. Having never left Sweden, the idea of traveling to a foreign country is equally exciting and nerve-racking. 

Amanda departs for Brisbane, Australia, not having any friends or connections in the place she will soon call home. She has secured an apartment for herself, but she doubts this decision as to feeling isolated, not having friends or family around her like she had back in Sweden, but culturally Swedish people don’t share accommodation with other people so she decides it is the right decision. 

She starts work at her new job, feeling a little lonely and finds that making new friends is a daunting experience. She finds everyone she encounters at the gym, in town and in the Swedish club are more interested in their phones than meeting new people. She attempts very hard to makes to friends with her work colleagues as it seems the easiest way to make friends through commonality, work. The people she works with generally go out clubbing on weekends on both Friday and Saturday night. Amanda has never been much for clubs but as she is in a new town she decides to follow their lead and join in on their partying lifestyle. To start off with she is really enjoying herself, she lives for the weekend when she can go out with her work friends and party. She feels she is making real friendships. 2 months pass and she continued on a cycle of work – party – repeat. Something has changed in her, she finds herself being consumed with a sense of loneliness and depression.

 
 She decides that in order to break the cycle of alcoholism and repetition,  she is going to ask her friends to go play Laser Tag on Friday night after work instead of drinking. This is an activity that Amanda really likes the idea of. Her friends say it seems like a great idea and agrees to meet at Laser Tag at 7:30pm. It is now 8:15pm, Amanda is waiting outside Laser Tag, and her friends have not shown up. She messages her friends, 15 minutes later she receives a string of drunken texts, saying that they are not coming and that they had been drinking. Feeling betrayed and alone, Amanda goes to a nearby Arcade Bar. She has always enjoyed video games and would play with her family and cousins growing up. Amanda spends 30 minutes playing The Simpsons Arcade, when without noticing someone else starts playing as player two. Without looking at each other the two play and chat, connecting about the links to video games and telling stories about their childhood. Amanda feels a real connection with Player Two but has not faced him yet. When the game ends Amanda and Player Two face each other, they have connected without even seeing each other. Amanda and Player Two finds themselves attracted to the other person without taking in account looks. It is like they are the only two in the bar, the surroundings are blurred as the two are so engrossed with each other. Amanda finds out that Player Two lives in Toowoomba and is just visiting Brisbane. They both want to keep in touch. Player Two recommends playing some online video games together. The following weekend Amanda skips out on her work friends and plays a Mass Multiplayer Online Game, Sea of Thieves with Player Two and a group of his friends that also live in different places around the world. They embark on adventures together and talk about their lives, hopes and their struggles for making true connections in such a busy and superficial world. As a month goes by Amanda finds herself making real friends that care about her with Player Two and the other people she meets. Player Two as well as some others she has met through the game who live in the area meet at Laser Tag, have an amazing time. After Amanda and Player Two return to her place and play some two-player co-op video games. They play all night and end up kissing.

Two months later Amanda and Player Two have moved in together. They still play online games with the people they have met but now do other activities with everyone such as hiking, games nights and laser tag. Amanda contemplates her journey to this point, the fear and excitement of moving to Australia, the joy she first felt when she thought she made friends with her work colleagues, the depression she felt from her repeated alcohol binges, the loneliness and betrayal she felt when her friends abandoned her, and joy she knows feels after her chance encounter with Player Two.
