Idea vs. fact based.
"Education is the kindling of a flame and not the filling of a vessel"- Socrates.

IDEA BASED: This type of education focuses on creating leaders for tomorrow while keeping in mind their strengths and not categorizing them based on their weaknesses. Here, a student is allowed to think 'differently' from others. They are allowed to ask 'Why?' and 'How?' rather than mugging up what is already proven.

E.g. The subject entrepreneurship. Students are encouraged to express their 'ideas', experiences, opinions related to the subject. They are allowed to apply these concepts in real life and they themselves with the help of activities understand how this corporate and materialistic word runs. While doing so, they develop certain life skills that help them to become independent humans.

FACT BASED: fact based education otherwise known as 'traditional education' focuses on rote learning and memorizing topics without considering the potential of each student and if they don't get A's,blame them. It's almost like "learn all the formulas and you will be successful in life!"

E.g. Earlier this week I came across an instagram post that said "school didn't teach us how to rent a flat, how to open a bank account, how to drive etc. but I'm so glad I know the Pythagoras theorem".

"20% of the population is students but sooner or later they will be 100% of the world."

Thank you.

“The Difference between ordinary and extra ordinary is that little extra.”

Since years we have been following the method of fact based education and the end result has always been an ordinary product. Idea based educations helps in stepping that extra mile and consuming that extra knowledge that helps the students to use their own abilities in their own different way to be that extraordinary student and not product.

When students are involved and engaged with the material, directing their learning of it and working on it with others, they are developing important learning skills. They are learning to ask questions, to find answers, to challenge reasons, to consider alternatives, to evaluate evidence, and to solve problems. The acquisition of those skills is enhanced further with constructive feedback from teachers. Students leave these kinds of learning experiences, not just knowing the content, but equipped to learn more on their own and for themselves.

For example, Entrepreneurship as a subject helps the student to think out of the box and take the extra mile. Activities like innovating your own product, and being the entrepreneur yourself by presenting it to the class and marketing it converts the fact based education into real life education.

"Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of mind to think."- Albert Einstein.

FACT BASED: It only focuses on the text book definitions and theories which has already been proven; not the answers to the 'Why's and how's"
EG: subjects like informatics requires a student to know the syntax and coding in order to have a better knowledge of the subject.
IDEA BASED: idea based education is not just about the facts but also exploration of ideas and alternatives for the facts.
EG: In schools now we use project based learning that involves a dynamic classroom approach in which students gain practical knowledge by exploring the real world, subjects like entrepreneurship and psychology.
hence, idea based education leaves a student with a broader point of view and fact baseeducation leaves a student with a w

Idea based vs Fact based education

FACT BASED: in the previous decade, standardized and rote memorized tests were considered essential to assess and categorize students. A student who couldn't achieve a certain target set by a school would start feeling inferior and would be seen weaker and having less potential than other students. However the world is progressing and realizing that no two minds work the same and every student has a different potential.

IDEA BASED : In today’s academic atmosphere, idea based education is given more priority than rote memorizing.

More schools provide hands on learning, and multi sensory memorization techniques like auditory and visual learning, idea based education helps to develop creativity in students and encourages them different solutions as opposed to one solution.

For instance in the subject of history it is essential to know dates and names of battles however if a hands on experience is given such as role plays on why a certain event happens it will provoke the students interest.
Educations systems are slowly starting to move beyond facts and written answers.

idea based education:
If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

Some subjects are difficult for students. Specialists obviously know their subject very well, but it is important to see that subject from a student’s perspective, and to not necessarily assume prior knowledge or skills. As a teacher, you should try to place yourself in the frame of mind of a novice learner, and only by doing this will you be able to fully comprehend your own studies.
eg : when you are taught a history subject, you can only remember what is taught and how to explain it clearly only if you had been taught the way you find interest in that subject.
whereas if you have experienced it, you would have been able to explain it even better.

fact based education:

“Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn.”
        -Benjamin Franklin

/Idea-Based Education/
1. Idea based education enables students to understand what, why, and how’s of the information presented to them.
2. It helps each students to bring out their best.
3. Idea-based education is the reason why we have the facts in fact-based education.

Eg. In Entrepreneurship, we were learning about marketing. To get a more in-depth knowledge on this topic, we had an activity which let us be creative marketers.

/Fact-Based Education/
1. It is a standardized way of learning which states facts and expects students to learn what’s given to them.
2. It doesn’t explore a students full potential.
3. Fact-based education gives us a firm base for our learning which we can choose to explore further or not which then leads to new discoveries.

Eg. In Business, we learnt about steps to form a company. In this, we studied certain rules and regulations which have to be followed while forming a company. This doesn’t make us think differently but everyone learns the same thing.
