Nick is a very simple man, whereas the poeple surrounding him are all very materialistic and worried greatly about money, he enjoys to "walk in the park" whereas others wouldn't (chapter 2).
Gatsby:
Gatsby is a wealthy young man living in a mansion in West Egg “who represented everything for which [Nick] have an unaffected scorn” (page 2). He goes along living has Jay Gatsby with all of this money that no one knows how it was aquired. As the book progresses it is revealed that his real name is James Gatz, who was born on a farm. Where later in his life had dedicated his living to becoming wealthy.

Daisy:
Daisy is Nick's cousin who is married to a very wealthy man, also who happens to be the love of Gatsby's life hes dedicated his wealth to. When they were young the two had fallen in great love but were seperated, and after 5 years Daisy had moved on.She is sardonic and somewhat cynical, and behaves superficially to mask her pain at her husband’s constant infidelity.
Tom:
Tom is the rich husband of Daisy who was built from his solid old family. Tom had been cheating on Daisy with a lower class women named Myrtle, he "was… aggressively forward” and incredibly arrogant (page 7).

First Scene: Gatsby's and Daisy's Date
This is a crucial scene because the five year silence between Gatsby and Daisy has finally been broken. Also, Gatsby breaks Nick's mantle clock, representing that he believes he can stop time and restore their relationship to its state before the war.
Second Scene: Myrtle's Death
This scene is crucial to the text as it acts as the resolution to the conflict and climax. When Tom's mistress, Myrtle, is killed, there is nothing holding his and Daisy's relationship back. Although it was Daisy that struck Myrtle, Gatsby took the blame for her actions, which ultimately cost him his life.

The American Dream is ultimately unatainable.
The dream of living a perfect life, being wealthy and having the love of your life by yourside is not as easy at it may seem. Gatsby may have had all the money, although it is illegally obtained, yet the chance he was about to get Daisy she was lost. Lost for the same reason he gained the money, his bootlegging involvement.

A major theme that is in the book is The American Dream, the desire to be rich and succesesful is at the root to Gatsby's urge to reunite with Daisy. Gatsby wanting this so much he even gets involved with bootlegging business which is the reason he's rich enough for Daisy. Also being the reason he loses her when Tom reveals this to her in chapter 7, how he was selling "grain alcohol over the counter" (page 133).
