The book was released in February 1890, written by Arthur Conan Doyle. The book is about a young woman named Mary Morstan who seeks out the detective's services to uncover what happened to her father. He died ten years before the girl sought out the detective. Four years after her father's death, the girl begins to receive a pearl of great value every year. After six years of receiving these pearls, without knowing the reason or who sent them, the girl receives a note from the same person who sent her the pearls, arranging a meeting. Mary, Sherlock Holmes and Watson go together to meet Thaddeus Sholto, the anonymous sender of the pearls, son of the late Major Sholto, who had been Mary's father's colleague as a prison guard in the Andaman Islands. The plot involves a treasure stolen from a raja by a group of four who seal a pact – hence the sign of the four. The thieves and murderers are arrested.
