Arguably, the Soviet Union manipulated the Polish resistance to rise up against the Wehrmacht in 1944 and then suffer a huge defeat. This would allow the Soviets to 'influence' a weakened Poland in the future.

On August 20, 1968, the Soviet Union led Warsaw Pact troops in an invasion of Czechoslovakia to crack down on reformist trends in Prague. The Warsaw Pact, despite being said to be the Soviet Union's version of NATO, was actually used to maintain control over its member states and suppress dissent. The Soviet Union was to blame for the Cold War because its actions in Czechoslovakia demonstrated its unwillingness to allow Eastern European countries political freedom or independence from Soviet control. This led to increased tension with the West, and reinforcing the division of Europe further.

Prague was not liberated by Russia, yet it was agreed at Yalta that Russian armies should occupy Prague.

The Communist take over of Yugoslavia was an example of 'salami tactics' - taking power step-by-step. After World War II, President Beneš initially ruled by decree but was pressured by Communist leader Klement Gottwald to target anti-Communists, while Communists gained control of the police, army, and press. In the 1946 elections, the Communist Party (KSC) won the most votes, and although the government still included non-Communists, they were soon removed through intimidation and arrests. Under Stalin’s influence, Czechoslovakia rejected the Marshall Plan and joined Cominform, deepening Soviet control.

The continuous campaign of Anti-American hate propaganda as a result of the communist Soviet influence most likely contributed to the rising tensions between the two world powers.
