We were also introduced three dimensional shapes. Many objects
that you see in your day to day life like Book, Pencil box, Ice cream
cone, Football and Cylinder are three dimensional objects. All these
objects occupy some shape and have three dimensions –length,
breadth and height or depth.
In Geometry , the shape or the figure that has
three(even higher) dimensions, are known as solids or three
dimensional shapes. The study of the properties , volume and the
surface area of three dimensional shapes is called solid Geometry

A cylinder is defined as a surface consisting of all the points on all
the lines which are parallel to a given line and which pass through a
fixed plane curve in a plane not parallel to the given line. Such
Cylinders have , at times, been referred to as generalized cylinders.
Cylinders are solid with circles at both ends and a smoothly curving
surface all around.
In differential geometry, a cylinder is defined more broadly as any
ruled surface which is spanned by a one-parameter family of
parallel lines. A cylinder whose cross section is an ellipse, parabola
or hyperbola is called an elliptic cylinder, parabolic cylinder, or
hyperbolic cylinder respectively.

A cylinder is a geometric solid that is very common in everyday
life, such as a soup can. If you take it apart you find it has two
ends, called bases, that are usually circular. The bases are always
congruent and parallel to each other.
