GOLD DIGGING TODAY

Reflecting on our patriarchal society, the notion that women are naturally dependent on men to be the breadwinners of the family is still present to this day. With the hundreds of thousands of single mothers who provide for their families, women prove time after time that they are more than capable of financially providing for their families. Although many of us know this to be true, I have found it interesting how American society implicitly conveys that women will be financially dependent on men in everyday conversation. Not only this, but there seems to be a shift in the 21st on the connotation of a Gold Digger.

Someone who only likes people because of how much money they have, or because of the items they own. Gold digging has been present since the beginning of time in the form of prostitutes and has always had a negative conniption with with it. This act of lust and greed was considered extremely unjust to most societies currently to this day.

What was once seen as unjust in the past since the beginning of time has evolved over the past decade. Millennials in America praise the term "gold digger," its synonyms, or anything that associates with the term's actions. "How?", One might ask. Millennials now use the word as a sort of expression relating to one's intelligence, cunning, and lucrative skills.

Everyday Conversations With Friends

One of my friends who is beautiful, athletic, funny, and has excellent merit has a boyfriend of 2 years. Whenever we talk about her and her boyfriend, we tend to make jokes about how they will get married. One of the statements she made was along the lines of, “I cannot wait to be his housewife.” As I laughed because with all her accolades, I know that she is kidding, but she is not. I ask her, “Why would you want to be a housewife when you have so much going for you.” She humbly brags to me about how she is the whole package (rightfully so) and doesn’t need to depend on her boyfriend/ future husband for anything, but expresses to me that it would just be easier for him to make money as she handles the finances her family. Although this is no longer America’s stereotype of a women’s place in marriage any longer, she chooses to follow the stereotype; falling prey to 20th-century stigmas of a women’s place.

When a Millennial Girl Meets a Boy

As my friend is telling me about a new guy that she is seeing I remind her that she needs to get his social security number, and my friend reminds me that she is going to steal his credit card. Of course, we are kidding, but throughout the conversation, my friend and I express how she is going to use a guy she genuinely likes only to take his money and support her shopping habits. Millennials use man dependent women as humor to make fun of the fact that she and I both know that she does not need to depend on a man for anything that she wants or needs.

Example of its Old/Negative Connotation in Pop Culture

As I was listening to my music on shuffle, the classic “Gold Digger” song by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx played. As I was singing along to its lyrics it started to dawn on me how demeaning “Gold Digger” is to American women with some of his most notable lyrics form the song being “Now I ain't sayin' she a gold digger, but she ain't messin' with no broke n*ggaz”, “If you fuckin' with this girl then you betta be paid”, and “If you ain't no punk holla, “ We want prenup.”” Lyrics such as these give the impression that there are still 21st-century women who do not want to make an honest living through hard work. Alternatively, they would instead take a mans money and use it for her own needs and wants.

Throughout the years this subjective standpoint has not worsened but has become a cultural success and phenomena in social media. People used to view golddiggin in a negative light, but social media has claimed the harsh term and has profited from it. The social media account joannertherscammer has accumulated over 2 million social media followers, has made VMA appearances, conducted magazine shoots, by playing the role of a poor woman who scams men for there money to live a lavish lifestyle. Not only this, but she gives lessons and teaches aspiring scammers in the way of taking back the idea that “women are dependent on men” and use it to empower all to take what's yours. There are countless instances on Twitter where tweets of women expressing how they are going to scam their way through life following Joanne’s footsteps by taking notions that have oppressed women and use them to empower them.

It is easy to look at any one of these situations and dictate if the choices and actions made in my examples are progressive or degressive in implicit egalitarianism. Some feminists could read these examples and think that all joannethesacmmer or my everyday conversation makes light that men see women as being dependent on them. Others will see the actions taken as a form of empowerment. It is similar to when minorities claim a racial slur or symbolically racial imagery as their own. This way it is a term of interment and empowerment on behalf of the oppressed.
