Now that westward expansion is growing, many people want to claim lands in Texas with only a population 4,000 Mexicans. Texas even offered huge tracts of land, and it seems only Americans were lured in. Since Mexico gained independence from Spain they changed their system, and Stephen Austin got permission after a year. This was the beginning to a life in Texas filled with hardships and disagreements with Mexicans, and led to the independence of being one country for nearly 10 years, the Lone Star Republic. It was not an easy decision to let Texas into the United States because it would break the equal number of slave states and free states. I am excited to receive lots of land to grow crops on and support my family, but the journey will be long. If we all move to Texas, won't we outnumber the Mexicans?
