Washington is progressive. The progressive movement is focused on fixing problems that developed in society during the industrial growth. Washington has a positive outlook on progression throughout the entire "Atlanta Exposition" especially when he says to "cast it (your bucket) down in making friends in every manly way of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded." He is adamant on improving human conditions, and that includes equality and social ways.
(Reading the American Past, Document 21-5)

DuBois is sort of kind of the progressive movement. He fights for the rights HE and the white people made priority. He caught attention on many topics from the black people at the time, but didn't seem to want to focus on matters specifically to help them. His cult gained followers, he "arose as essentially the leader not of one race but of two, -a compromiser between the south, the north, and the negro."
(Reading the American Past, Document 21-6)

Washington and Du Bois disagreed on the foundation of the social mending. Their differeent priorities were on wealth. Although Du Bois "surrendered their [Negroes] civil and political rights, " it "was to be exchanged for larger chances of economic development." (Reading the American Past, Document 21-6) This shows that Du Bois' thought process was that as long as economic development and opportunities are fair and back on track, not much else matters. While Washington's stance seemed to be more focused on overall well-being of the citizens. In his opinion, progress would be "to cement the friendship of the two races" and take advantage of agricultural, mechanical, etc. opportunities to build the nation as a whole. (Reading the American Past, Document 21-5)

Since I am more focused on the well being of people and don't believe that financial wealth is greater than friendship and health, I am on Washington's side. His argument shows heart and equality which lasts longer and builds better people-therefore a better nation- than just money can. Once social differences are merged, his focus on bettering mechanical and industrial hardships will bring the nation up again.

Booker T. Washington was a part of the Progressive Movement. From document 21-5, Booker states "cast it [your bucket] down in agriculture, mechanics, in commerce, in domestic service, and in the profession." Booker tells them to make friends with people in any way that they can. Dive into the community in any way possible to get involved.

I think that DuBois also played a part in the Progressive movement. Although he did not agree with everything Washington said or did, he still played a role. He believed in helping African Americans to get higher in social status which was also Washington's main goal. It was just the tactics they used that differed.

The main point that Washington and DuBois agreed on was the fact that African Americans were being treated poorly, and something needed to be done for them to have equality. One thing that they did not agree on was how to gain this equality. Washington told the people to immerse themselves in anything they could to try to gain that power, whereas DuBois had more of an attitude to give up their education and political power.

I think that Washington's argument was better than DuBois. Washington was more about making sure that African Americans were immersing themselves in the culture and getting involved in anything that they could. DuBois had more of the idea for them to be withdrawn. i think that Washington's method would have a much better chance of working than for African Americans to withdraw from political powers, education, and civil rights. If they want to see a change, it would be better for them to use Washington's method.
