Land: They gave the Native Americans English weapons such as guns to fend off their lands. The British also encouraged them to fight us, but the Indians told the British that they were defending their lands, not fighting.

Sea: On the sea, they stopped our trade with France and other nations. They also captured our soldiers and ships because they needed a crew.

Lake Erie: September, 1813, we won the Battle of Lake Henry. We were led by Captain Oliver Hazard Perry. This important battle helped the U.S control the western lands.

Battle of the Thames: General William Henry led 4,500 soldiers into Canada, The British soldiers’ headquarters. We beat the other side. Since Tecumseh was killed, many tribes gave up their alliances with them. This was a major change because Britain had a lot of tribes on their side.

Washington DC: The British attacked Washington DC and the White House in August, 1814.
Describe the events that led to the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears. Who were the key people? What were their roles? What was the impact on Native Americans?

The events that led to the Indian Removal Act and the Trail of Tears was when Andrew Jackson led us to victory. He was very famous with the people. Then when he was elected as president, he was the first president from the new states: Tennessee. That made a teensy bit more famous. The country’s voters felt like Jackson was “a common man” just like them. He was the symbol of the country’s changing sense of what a democracy should be. His ideas on democracy were called “Jacksonian Democracy”, which made him more famous. He was also a bit of a “war hawk”. Then he signed a law called the Indian Removal Act, which had all the tribes move to the Indian Territory marked for them(later was renamed as Oklahoma). Gold brought even more settlers to the area where the Indians used to live. The Cherokee had assimilated to the white settler’s culture. John Ross, a Cherokee chief went to the Supreme Court to argue that they should stay on their lands. The Court agreed with the chief, but the president ignored the Indian’s pleas. He wouldn’t enforce their ruling. Martin Van Buren was elected as president after Jackson had served two terms. The Cherokee hoped that Buren would act justly and side with them, but Buren actually agreed with Jackson. HE forced the remaining Cherokee to move west. About one out of four Cherokees died on the trail of tears.

link: http://cherokee1838.tripod.com/Trail_Tears_Painting.jpg
