During today's conversation, our group talked more in depth about the different aspects of Children with Special Needs and the stigma that comes with that. We discussed how children develop their own stigma with being special needs, the stigma that parents of special needs children possess, the lack of knowledge/understanding that peers have as well as adults. 

How did I contribute to the conversation? i contributed to the conversation by giving information found on the internet as well as speaking from a parent prospective. I have a child that has ADHD and I spoke with the group about how people are quick to label your child based on the disability and not the students ability. I've learned that I have to be my child's advocate, becasue there are some educators that are not looking at the best interest of the child but rather focusing on grouping them and getting the financial benefit. I also found that many parents go through the 5 stages of the grieving process, when there children are diagnosed with a special need. 

What insights did you offer the group? The insights that I offered to the group was for us to think on the different levels of stigmas that surround these children. Focus on the major stigmas that need attention brought to them and the ways that we can help bring awareness to others. We went over how important it is to have more training in the special education department. Since a lot of stigmas are created due to the lack of knowledge individuals have about special needs students. Stigmas are formed by teachers , peers and even the students themselves. As a special education paraprofessional I witness the treatment/stigmas placed on exceptional students on a daily basis. Since they are different several people get frustrated with their presence in their classroom. They do not understand/respect that these students  are human beings.They will  even began to treat their behavior as  being disrespectful instead of acting like being a child with a learning disability. Peers see them and laugh because they are they learn, act or appear differently in which creates a sense of low self-esteem of the exceptional student. As a participant in this group, I contributed ( as well as my peers) the fact that stigmas are not just created in schools ,but out in the world  as well. We talked about how the community doesn't really accept special need kids and how they don't offer that much support to them. We talked about how parents sometimes blame themselves for their children having disabilities. We also talked about how in the school setting teachers just want to assign children in a special need classroom without the proper testing. For example, the child may have had continuous behavior problems. Instead of maybe choosing different strategies or just taking the time to see why the child is acting out, they just want to say that the child needs to be placed in a special education class.  
     I contributed to this conversation by finding facts and data on the computer to support the stigma that comes along with children with special needs.
