The poor fell from nearly 60% in the early 1990's to a staggering 20.7% in 2010. therefore, the Vietnamese are becoming wealthy and are suitable to have average meals. Also there is a huge gap between the rich and the poor. A poor family will have small meals, since some can't find a job or they're too sick or old to be put to work. They normally have home-grown food, sometimes canned food. Such as beets, carrots, or other canned foods. Sometimes they don't have enough food to feed the whole family, they give the most food to the kids or the sick family member.

The solution for rural areas was to grow crops in their garden, or buy farmland to harvest crops. The downside is that some crops are not able to survive the cold and harsh winters of Vietnam, some people were local enough to go to supermarkets, to purchase food. People who were unfortunate, had to go next door and ask for food. In cities, supermarkets didn't have a wide range of food. Rice was the main food the Vietnamese ate before the market grew.
