       CONTENT                                         Before the war :

Education Before the war, students studied the history and geography of British and
standard of living they were taught how to converse in English.

Singapore as home                                  During the war  :

During the war when the Japanese took over Singapore, the Japanese Burned all their English textbooks and changed them to Japanese ones.

The Japanese teachers forced them to study Japanese and learn about their country.

                                                       After the war :

After the war, when the British came back to rule Singapore, students went back to study about the British and no longer needed to learn Japanese.

SINGAPORE AS HOME :

                                    Before the war :

Before the war, women were treated the same as compared to the men. Even though many did not consider Singapore as home, they still gave birth to their children there.

                                    During the war :

During the war, women were treated poorly by the Japanese as they were humiliated and disgraced by them. There were some who became pregnant but were unable to deliver their children as they were physically too weak to do so. Even though they wanted to give birth to them, they knew that the child would not be able to survive.

                                    After the war :

After the war, many women were traumatized by the whole event that took place [Japanese Occupation] and were too afraid to be conceived. There were also some who could no longer conceive as they might have been injured during the war.

                                   Before the war :

Before the war, many thought of Singapore as simply just a stopover for them to earn money to send back to their homeland. They were never loyal to Singapore as many left their families in their hometown.

                                   During the war :

During the war, when Singapore was taken over by the Japanese, they knew that they had only themselves to depend on for the protection of the country. They had to risk their lives for Singapore in order to protect it and along the way, many started to feel a sense of belonging and loyalty for Singapore.

                                   After the war :

After the war, most people decided to stay in Singapore and there war even some who even brought their families over to live with them.

                                   Before the war :

Before the war, Asians were treated unfairly because they had the misconception that the British were superior as British held higher ranking positions compared to them but they still have jobs.

                                   During the war:

During the war, when Japanese took over Singapore, Asians were forced to work in order to get food while British was no longer superior as they were Prisoners of war and forced to do hard labor work.

                                   After the war:

After the war, locals were treated equally to the British and wanted to have more involvement in governmental affairs and some may even hold high ranking positions.
STANDARD OF LIVING:

                                   Before the war :

Before the war , although people did not have much food to consume , they had sufficient food to fill their stomach. They were able to afford rice and vegetables as it was cheaper ,unlike meat items which was high in price.

                                   During the war:

During the war,people did not have enough food to eat.they were starving and had to grow sweet potatoes to eat. Teenagers had to look for food such as fruits after school to make sure their family was not starving.

                                   After the war:

After the war,there was an extreme shortage of food and and the black market continued to thrive.the British decided to open up the people's restaurant to make food more affordable for the people.

                                   Before the war:

Before the war, people were able to do whatever they want to do without the British forcing them to do whatever they are uncomfortable with or unwillingly to coorperate.

                                   During the war:

During the war, people had limited freedom as they were forced to pay respect to the Japanese, their flag and sing their national anthem in Japanese language which they did not understand. They also need to communicate in Japanese language and not their common languages which they may not be comfortable with. People may get severe consequences if they did not obey the Japanese's rules even though they were provided with basic services.

                                   After the war:

After the war, people return to speaking their common languages and their own way of living like not living in a world with full of rules and restrictions.
