The Story appears to be set in a near-future era where a certain enzyme has inevitably infected the water supply of many countries and is causing a stage-layered disease that kills people periodically. He is a speaker/researcher/journalist for the WHO, whose task is to analyze the situation in different countries worldwide and provide an assessment of the water supply; formulate a way to solve the problem and calculate the time it takes to alleviate the situation.

The conflict of the story turns out to be the past of each of the two characters for both Marisol and Mike, both of which has had past experiences being shamed for their body, both of which know the fact that the world is coming to a possible halt and that they do not have much time left. It tackles the struggle of life and time, as well as how to make use of the time left. The story is able to properly show the experiences the two have had over their body size and body shape through the description and added emotion of their reactions. Such as his overwhelming response to the sight of Marisol’s figure, prompting him to touch himself to forcefully get rid of the thought, as well as him being able to deduce the people’s staring at the WHO conference.

Another character mentioned in the story is Peter, who is mentioned to be in his last stages (referring to the enzyme/disease). As the two talk in the diner, Mike asks Peter as to why he views his eating and his life that way, in reference to the stack of pancakes and sausages. This is one of the story’s turning points. Peter himself knows the value of life and time remaining. He is living it to his fullest, and he wants Mike to know that he should not be spending it on his own.

Back to Marisol. When the two meet, as it turns out, Mike learns a lot more, that the hourglass figured body has had her own experiences with dripping sand, that she too has been shamed and violated for her own body. It does not faze Mike, in fact this intricate detail is what helps build a relationship between the two. It was the coincidental experiences between the two of them, namely their past and affiliation, that brings the two together.

The water problem actually serves as one of the pillars to establish the meaning of “time”. The story starts off with an outsider perspective of Mike’s current life, in which most of his actions are influenced by his past; his backstory.

The story is a great representation of the effect one’s appearance has on others, as well as the effect our comments can have on a person’s wellbeing and future. The place is set in the Philippines as one of the settings had happened in Makati and it was mentioned that this was Mike’s home country. One of the dominant characteristics in our culture is the tradition of family gatherings, which include the undeniable but inevitable comments that our relatives can give us, such as “lumalaki ka na ha” or the usual “may girlfriend/boyfriend ka na ba” question. As a person who grew up hearing these kinds of questions, as a person who isn’t very confident in their body image and is unfortunately single. It is hard to avoid harboring a sort of dull feeling when it comes to receiving those comments or questions. It does not help that these kinds of things are actually glorified both in media and in general live culture itself. On Mirasol’s side, it mainly is the beauty and body standards set for women publicly, as well as standards men have with their morals. One of the reigning standards one has over another is their appearance, and sometimes these, not-easily-answerable thoughts end up plaguing over someone’s head should they have their self-esteem shattered. It goes to show that society in the Philippines, especially in the media, has a harmful and sometimes toxic attitude towards what is to be considered as beauty.

Although it is inferrable that the author is not promoting any sort of overly unhealthy habits, they still aim to tell everyone to live their life to the fullest. We should not let the comments and remarks of others bring us down and drastically change the trajectory of our lives. Should the time come when our days finally possess quantity, the author wishes us to maximize it to its fullest, that it should be just as enough time to not be alone, to do what we’ve always wanted to.
