Lumen prints is a solar photogram. Which is a process where you dont have to use a camera or darkroom. The process involves black and white photographic paper. It is a subject matter that usaully but not always consists of organic objects and materials. This can involve leafs, stones and stick and flowers, however, some materials maybe harder to expose and sho. You can become creative using this technique. By positioning the materials in a different way to create interesting outcomes. The most important element in creating this print is of course the sun as the photographic paper developes when exposed to any source of light.

the steps of creating a lumen print:

Composition: when doing the lumen prints you have to get all your materials together and set out. For example, getting your objects and materials you wish to use in your lumen prints and your photographic paper and place them in your desired position.

set up the contact-print frame:
You then have to place the photographic paper and your materials (your plants/stones etc) under a piece of glass. After you have done this you have to clamp the paper and glass in place under a "hinged conact-printing frame".

When you have done this step you expose the paper to light this can be a UV light or of course the sun. You should expose the lumen print to light for several hours or days to allow the image to expose and get the desired outcome.

Once the process is complete and the print has been exposed remove the photographic paper from the frame which has been holding it in place and the glass and wash the lumen print with water for two minutes. You then place the print into the fixer bath for another two minutes. When doing this process you will see the tone of the print to change. After you have fixed the print you then wash it under water and then leave to dry.

The process and what we could have done better

When experimenting with the lumen prints, we firstly had to go through the steps and take note on how to do this process.
I then had to gather my materials (which i chose sticks and leafs and stones) After i had done this i had to get my photographic paper and place my materials in which i wanted. After i had done this step I placed the glass onto the photographic paper and placed a heavy book onto it so it would not be exposed to light. After i had done this step I took the print (which had the glass and the book on it) outside and carefully took the book off and exposed the photographic paper to light. I waited about 15 to 20 mins for it to expose. I then took the print inside and washed and fixed it.

The thing I did that I could have done better:
I could have exposed the print to light for more time, this would have allowed the print to develope the objects which were on top of the print more.

Another step I could have done better was fixing the print for more time ( more than 2 mins) to allow the print to develope and achieve darker tones. As my print came out more brown than black. As the fixer strips away the unexposed silver halide.

Also i could have used better materials as some materials are harder to expose.

Maybe i could have also used a better compostion? placing my materials in a better way?

use materials that are flat, like pressed flowers and sticks as you will get a better, clearer image of what the objects are and expose better.

Make use you use glass that allows UV through it.

Expose the lumen print for longer than ten minutes. Maybe about 20/25 minutes as this will allow the objects be exposed more and youll get a better image.

make sure you meausure out the fixing bath properly (ammonium thiosulfate 5% to 8%)

Allow the image to fix for about 4 minutes youll achieve darker tones and the fixer strips away the unexposed siliver halide.

Use a good compistion of your materials, this will achive better outcomes of your image and will look more interesting.
