Calpurnia is the finch family black cook since the death of atticus wife.calpurnia is unique in maycomb as she is one of the few black residents who is literate .calpurnia is a mother figure to scout and spends most of her time at the finches. Calpurnia takes scout to church on Sundays and this gives her an opportunity to understand the difference between the whites and blacks in maycomb.their respect for her grows enormously.calpurnoa is portrayed as a silent strong character who is grateful to good white people around her who are not racist.calpurnia church pastor makes space for them on the balcony among the coloured people.

Tom's kind nature is evident when he helps her complete tasks around the property for free. In court, Tom talks about the impossible situation Mayella put him in when she hugged and kissed him. Because he was black, he couldn't force her away, and escape seemed the only option, making him appear guilty. Despite his innocence and identity as an upstanding citizen, the jury decided against him because he was of a certain race.
