Listening: vechio castello

The part of Musgorsky's pictures at an exhibition I chose was the third movement or vechio Castillo. The song describes a peaceful setting, one of quiet and softness, the song however does not describe its peace to be happy. The piece is in a minor key and gives a sense of mystery. I imagine fog on a clear night when I hear this song, or maybe a castle far away. A castle covered by a blanket of darkness, maybe it's history is cursed or it's halls were once great. Now it is quiet and dark. It is almost a mountain from a distance.

The piece I chose was Nash Paul's "we are building a new world". The piece shows a high amount of creative irony as it depicts world war 1 and it's horrors as a hopeful sun rises. The sun represents the passing of time in devastation. The paintings land scapes are representing of death. Time will always pass even in death. The piece is meloncallic but still somehow stern in its approach.

I started composing my piece today. What was important about today was the tonality of the piece. It was difficult in a way because the piece is so dark and dreadful. However the sun does come up in the end therefor signifying hope. So I was thinking that the piece starts in a minor key. Something melancholic and slow. But in the end it turns to a major. I haven't exactly decided on an exact key yet but as of right now I'm thinking A major and f# minor.

I started composing this piece last week. I needed something sad but not too sad. something hopeful but not too hopeful. however while I was playing around with my piano at home, I found a melody that fit perfectly. it starts with the pattern I found being E A D E, then I just kept going with different patterns that start and end with tonic E. I do this because the piece to me is representing a resolve in life. the torn up landscape reshipped by war it seems as though the world is ending. however the sun keeps rising, the world resolves back to its tonic.

When I started this composition two weeks age, I had a basic idea of how I wanted this song to sound. I needed it to sound "uncomfortable". and today by changing some intervals and transitions, I have finally achieved that. The way the song moves feels as though it is constantly begging to be resolved. The musical elements I added is shown in some of the new minor chords I've included. however, my piece still needs to be filled in a bit more in that id like to add some other effects maybe and just give it more of a haunting vibe.
