Gregor Samsa is the main character in the story “Metamorphosis” written by Franz Kafka. Gregor was a man whose age ranged in the 20s or 30s. He was a hard worker who was essentially forced to work in order to pay off his father’s debts. Gregor's father beat him down mentally and physically, chipping away at Gregor's psyche. He also lived with his sister Greta and his mother who both loved Gregor deeply, yet neither could confront Gregor's abusive father. When you take this into account you begin to ask the question how is this abuse ultimately affecting Gregors mental state.

Body

This can be seen when Gregor, all though in bug form is rushed to get to work; almost ignoring the fact he is now a bug. A good example of this is when, “He thought that he might get out of bed with the lower part of his body first, but this lower part, which he had not yet seen and of which he could form no clear conception, proved to difficult to move”(296), and after this almost avoiding the fact that there’s clearly some kind of problem he kept trying until, “almost wild with annoyance, he gathered his forces together and thrust out recklessly”(296).

Gregor's never necessarily had a good life or did his family. His father belittled him and psychologically abused him throughout his life. When Gregor metamorphosed to a bug if began to show how his family have always thought of him and that he was nothing but a pawn for them. This affected how Gregor viewed himself and his family and began to stir in self hate.If gregor had grown up in a different environment or perhaps a different era, how would his life changed?

Gregor had awoken one morning from a nightmare, to an unfamiliar feeling, he was sore and lying on his back looking up at the ceiling. He went to move his arms but to his surprise they weren't the arms he had been familiar with,he had changed. Gregor had turned into an insect. A giant repulsive insect with arms like twigs and a huge abdomen to top it off. He hadn't been quite as surprised to be an insect as you would expect a man to be. He stayed in bed for a while and gazed out his window staring into the grey sky. He had fallen into a state deep of depression. Ignoring the fact that he was now some sort of vermin. His “metamorphosis” into a bug may have been a reflection of Samsa’s inner being. Seeing as we know he's been belittled and alienated by his father, this may reflect his view of himself, with some of the same characteristics of an insect feeling vile. Samsas self worth was that of an insect, feeling so small in the world, his father's abuse had taken its toll
