'An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the United States for scientific and commercial testing. Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, check the safety of products destined for human use, and other biomedical, commercial, and health care uses. Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 BC.' https://animal-testing.procon.org/

There’s no excuse for hurting and killing animals for the sake of make-up, soap and other toiletries. Fortunately, experiments on animals for cosmetics products and their ingredients have been consigned to the history books in many parts of the world. Instead, companies have developed new, humane testing methods to ensure that their products don’t harm humans or animals.

https://www.peta.org.uk/issues/animals-not-experiment-on/cosmetics/

Animal Welfare Act (AWA) – A federal law that addresses the standard of care animals receive at research facilities. Yet it excludes roughly 95% of the animals tested upon (such as rats, mice, birds, fish, and reptiles) and provides only minimal protection for the rest. Labs are not required to report non-AWA protected animals.

http://aldf.org/resources/when-you-witness-animal-cruelty/animal-testing-and-the-law/
